Pouilly-Fuissé is an appellation d'origine contrôlée located in the Mâconnais district of southern Burgundy, France. The appellation encompasses four communes: Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly, and Vergisson. The vineyards are situated on limestone-rich slopes surrounding the distinctive rock formations of Solutré and Vergisson, which rise dramatically from the valley floor and serve as geological landmarks of the region.
The appellation's terroir is characterized by Jurassic limestone soils with varying amounts of clay and marl, creating diverse microclimates across different vineyard sites. Only Chardonnay is permitted under the appellation rules, and the wines must achieve higher minimum alcohol levels than neighboring Mâcon appellations. The vineyards benefit from southeastern exposure on steep slopes, providing optimal sun exposure while the limestone subsoil offers excellent drainage and mineral complexity. In 2020, the appellation introduced its first premier cru classifications, recognizing 22 specific climats with superior terroir.
Pouilly-Fuissé wines typically display greater concentration and complexity than other Mâconnais whites, with characteristic mineral backbone derived from the limestone soils. The wines often exhibit citrus and stone fruit flavors in their youth, developing nutty and honeyed notes with age. The limestone influence contributes a distinctive chalky minerality and crisp acidity that provides structure and aging potential, allowing the finest examples to develop for a decade or more.
