Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC is a white wine appellation located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, stretching across the provinces of Chieti, Pescara, Teramo, and L'Aquila. This designation covers vineyards planted throughout much of the region, from coastal areas near the Adriatic Sea to inland hills and mountainous terrain influenced by the Apennine Mountains.
The appellation permits wines made primarily from Trebbiano Toscano grapes, which must comprise at least 85% of the blend, with other authorized white varieties allowed to complete the remaining percentage. The diverse terroir ranges from coastal plains with calcareous soils to higher elevation sites with clay and limestone compositions. The climate varies from Mediterranean influences near the coast to more continental conditions inland, with significant diurnal temperature variation in hillside vineyards.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wines typically display crisp acidity and light to medium body, with flavors ranging from citrus and green apple to more mineral-driven profiles depending on vineyard location and winemaking approach. Traditional producers often employ longer skin contact and indigenous yeast fermentation, creating wines with greater texture and complexity than the simple, light style historically associated with Trebbiano varieties. The wines can range from fresh and immediate drinking styles to more structured examples capable of short-term aging.
