Cantina Zaccagnini is a winery based in Abruzzo, in central Italy's Adriatic region. The producer specializes in wines from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, one of the region's principal appellations, focusing on the indigenous Montepulciano grape variety that defines the area's winemaking tradition.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC represents the heartland of Abruzzo's red wine production. Wines from this appellation are typically medium-bodied reds with moderate alcohol levels and acidity, displaying characteristics of dark berry fruit, dried herbs, and earth. The region's continental climate and limestone-rich soils produce wines with good structure and aging potential, ranging from approachable young versions to more concentrated, age-worthy expressions.

Cantina Zaccagnini's current portfolio focuses on Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, working directly with the region's flagship variety. The 2021 vintage demonstrates the producer's commitment to the appellation's core expression, offering insight into the vintage's balance and fruit character in this traditional Abruzzo wine style.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is located in the hills surrounding the medieval town of Montepulciano in southeastern Tuscany, Italy. This appellation was elevated to DOCG status in 1980, making it one of Italy's first prestigious wine classifications. The vineyards sit at elevations between 250 and 600 meters above sea level, positioned strategically on slopes that benefit from optimal sun exposure and natural drainage.

The region's terroir combines a Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, creating ideal conditions for slow grape ripening. Soils vary from sandy clay to volcanic deposits mixed with limestone, contributing to the complexity of the wines. Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, must comprise at least 70% of the blend, with Canaiolo and other approved varieties permitted. Traditional Riserva wines require a minimum of two years aging in wood followed by six months in bottle before release.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines typically display the classic Sangiovese profile enhanced by the unique terroir characteristics of this specific zone. These wines show darker fruit flavors and greater structure compared to standard Chianti, with notes of cherry, plum, and violet complemented by earthy undertones and firm tannins. The Riserva bottlings develop additional complexity through extended aging, revealing leather, tobacco, and spice notes while maintaining the bright acidity that defines quality Tuscan Sangiovese.
