Smith & Cross is a Jamaican rum bottled at navy strength — typically defined as 57% ABV or higher — a specification historically associated with the British Royal Navy's practice of storing spirits aboard ships at a proof high enough that gunpowder dampened by the spirit could still ignite. The brand produces a traditional Jamaican pot still rum, distilled at the Hampden Estate distillery in Trelawny Parish, one of Jamaica's oldest and most respected rum-making facilities.

Jamaican rum is distinguished by its use of "dunder" (the residue left in the still after distillation) and, at some distilleries, "muck pits" — fermentation aids that encourage the development of esters and congeners responsible for the style's characteristically funky, fruity, and pungent aromatic profile. Smith & Cross exhibits this profile in concentrated form: high-ester rum with notes of overripe tropical fruit, banana, and funk, amplified by the elevated alcohol content.
