Stellenbosch is South Africa's most prominent wine region, located approximately 50 kilometers east of Cape Town in the Western Cape province. The region encompasses a natural amphitheater of mountains and valleys, with the Stellenbosch Mountains to the north and the Helderberg range to the south. As South Africa's second-oldest town founded by Dutch settlers, Stellenbosch has been producing wine since the late 1600s and remains the country's most concentrated area of premium wine estates.

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Maritime influence from False Bay moderates temperatures, while the surrounding mountain ranges create diverse microclimates and aspects. Soils vary significantly across the region, from decomposed granite on the mountain slopes to alluvial deposits in the valley floors, with red clay and sandy loam predominating. These varied terroirs allow different grape varieties to thrive in distinct areas within the broader region.

Stellenbosch is particularly celebrated for Pinotage, the South African crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut that has become a signature variety. Cabernet Sauvignon performs exceptionally well here, often blended with Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties. The region also produces notable Chenin Blanc, which can range from crisp and mineral-driven to rich and barrel-fermented, along with Chardonnay and Shiraz. The combination of established winemaking traditions, diverse terroir, and modern viticultural techniques has positioned Stellenbosch as South Africa's flagship wine region.
