Puglia occupies the heel of Italy's boot, stretching along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts in the country's southeastern corner. This region has transformed from a bulk wine producer into a source of quality wines, leveraging its extensive vineyard area—among Italy's largest—and favorable Mediterranean climate. The region's flat to gently rolling terrain, punctuated by ancient olive groves, has supported viticulture since Greek colonization over two millennia ago.
The hot, dry summers and mild winters create ideal conditions for ripening red grape varieties, while cooling sea breezes from both coasts help moderate temperatures during the growing season. The diverse soils range from limestone and clay in the north to iron-rich red earth in the south. Key appellations include Primitivo di Manduria DOC in the Salento peninsula, known for powerful red wines, and Castel del Monte DOC in the north-central area, which produces both reds and whites from hillside vineyards.
Primitivo, genetically identical to California's Zinfandel, dominates red wine production and thrives in Puglia's warm climate, producing wines ranging from fruity and approachable to concentrated and age-worthy. Negroamaro, native to the region, creates deeply colored wines often blended with other varieties. Aglianico, more associated with neighboring regions, also finds expression here, particularly in the Castel del Monte area where it produces structured, tannic wines with aging potential.
