Pio Cesare does a great job with its classic 2019 Barolo (in production since 1881). The bottom of the front label reads "Barolo Pio" in memory of the legendary Pio Boffa. He was a wine entrepreneur who gained the immediate respect and love of all those who knew him. He passed away tragically during the COVID-19 pandemic just as the vaccines were being rolled out. This is a large production of about 70,000 bottles with fruit sourced from across seven vineyards in five villages. Despite those ambitious numbers, the wine remains strictly focused on bright Nebbiolo fruit with red cassis and aniseed. The finish is smooth with tannins that elegantly dissolve over the palate.
The 2018 Barolo opens to ripe aromas of dried plum and tobacco. This vintage lacks some of the complexity of a cooler growing season, but these results are far from monochromatic. Those tobacco aromas cede to cedar, earth, forest floor and hints of shaved truffle.
The 2015 Barolo is a beautifully balanced and tight expression of Nebbiolo that hits all the right spots on the palate, from the side of the mouth where you taste the acidity to the back where you get a sense of the wine's structure and integrated tannins. That freshness could pair well with a steak in pepper cream sauce. Long skin maceration times are followed by oak ageing, partially in botti with a smaller part in barrique.
The Pio Cesare 2013 Barolo offers all of the plentiful qualities that make this such a memorable vintage. Because the growing season was slightly cooler compared to the two years preceding it, 2013 offers a great sense of freshness and brightness. Fruit was sourced from seven different vineyard sites (with much of it coming from Serralunga d'Alba). Starting in 2015, Monforte d'Alba fruit will be added. The tannins are tightly integrated within the firm fabric of the wine. Yet, the finish is round and supple. This Barolo offers characteristic aromas of wild berry, black truffle and cola. It is executed in a very traditional style with botte grande and a tiny part barrique to give the wine a tad more oxygen during its integration and aging process.

Pio Cesare is a renowned wine producer based in the Piedmont region of Italy. The company was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and has since been passed down through five generations of the family. Pio Cesare is known for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Piedmont region.

The winery produces a range of wines, including Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Nebbiolo d'Alba. The grapes used in these wines are sourced from the family's own vineyards, as well as from carefully selected growers in the region.

Pio Cesare's winemaking philosophy is based on a deep respect for tradition, combined with a commitment to innovation. The winery uses modern techniques to ensure the highest quality wines, while also preserving the unique character of each vintage.

One of the most famous wines produced by Pio Cesare is the Barolo. This wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Barolo appellation, which is located in the heart of the Piedmont region. The wine is aged for at least three years in oak barrels, which gives it a complex and nuanced flavor profile. Barolo is known for its rich, full-bodied taste, with notes of cherry, leather, and tobacco.

Another popular wine produced by Pio Cesare is the Barbaresco. This wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Barbaresco appellation, which is located in the hills to the east of the Barolo region. The wine is aged for at least two years in oak barrels, which gives it a smooth and velvety texture. Barbaresco is known for its elegant, refined taste, with notes of red fruit, spice, and earth.

In addition to its red wines, Pio Cesare also produces a range of white wines, including the Gavi. This wine is made from Cortese grapes grown in the Gavi appellation, which is located in the southern part of the Piedmont region. The wine is aged for at least three months in stainless steel tanks, which gives it a crisp and refreshing taste. Gavi is known for its delicate, floral aroma, with notes of citrus and green apple.

Its wines are known for their exceptional quality and unique character, and are sought after by wine lovers around the world. Piemonte (Piedmont) occupies most of northwestern Italy, bordering Switzerland in the north and France in the west and almost reaching the Mediterranean coast. Its capital and largest city is Turin (Torino).

In the wine world, Piemonte is best known for the twin titans of Barolo and Barbaresco, along with other popular red wines made from Barbera and Dolcetto, the white Gavi, and sparkling Asti.

It has more DOCGs (17) and DOCs (42) than any other region (see maps: Asti area, Langhe, Monferrato, and northern), but no IGPs. In 2016, Piemonte produced 2.5 million hl (28.3 million cases) of wine, the majority of it (55%) red and 83% at the DOP level. The region’s primary grape varieties are Barbera (31%), Moscato (22%), Dolcetto (13%), and Nebbiolo (10%).

Barolo is a red wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape, which is known for its high tannins and acidity. Barolo has a long history, dating back to the 19th century when it was first produced in the town of Barolo. Today, it is one of Italy's most famous and prestigious wines.

Barolo is produced using traditional methods, with the grapes being hand-harvested and then fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years, although some producers age their Barolo for up to five years or more. This extended aging process gives Barolo its characteristic complexity and depth of flavour.

Barolo is known for its rich, full-bodied flavour, with notes of cherry, plum, and leather. It has a high tannin content, which gives it a firm structure and a long finish. Barolo is often described as a "wine for aging", as it can improve in the bottle for many years.

Some of the top Barolo producers include Giacomo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa, and Roberto Voerzio. These producers are known for their commitment to quality and their use of traditional methods. Barolo is also produced in several different appellations, including Barolo, Barbaresco, and Langhe.

Overall, Barolo is a wine that is steeped in history and tradition. Its rich flavour and complex character make it a favourite among wine enthusiasts around the world. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual drinker, Barolo is a wine that is sure to impress.
