Joseph Phelps - Cabernet Sauvignon

Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich and full-bodied wine that is perfect for those who enjoy a bold and complex taste profile. This wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that are grown in the Napa Valley region of California.

The taste profile of this wine is characterized by its deep, dark fruit flavors, such as blackberry and black cherry, as well as notes of vanilla, oak, and spice. The tannins are firm and well-structured, providing a long and satisfying finish.

Joseph Phelps is a family-owned winery that has been producing high-quality wines for over 40 years. The winery was founded by Joseph Phelps in 1973 and is now run by his son, Bill Phelps. The winery is known for its commitment to sustainable farming practices and its dedication to producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Napa Valley.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect for pairing with hearty dishes such as steak, lamb, or roasted vegetables. It is also a great wine to enjoy on its own, perhaps while relaxing with friends or family on a cool evening.

Overall, Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon is a must-try for anyone who appreciates a bold and complex wine with a rich history and a commitment to sustainability.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts lovely cigar box-like French oak, with delicate touches of cedar and vanilla accenting black cherries and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, this is ripe and approachable but not soft or flabby. Concentrated and structured, it's a solid "entry-level" Napa Cab, simultaneously juicy and velvety on the finish. It's a blend of multiple vineyards, from Calistoga down nearly to Coombsville.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 18 months in 40% new (51% American, 49% French) and 60% one- to two-year-old French and American oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple coloured, it does pirouettes out of the glass with notes of crushed blackberries, wild blueberries, and ripe blackcurrants plus hints of lilacs, menthol, forest floor and pencil shavings with a touch of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate is as intense as it is elegant, featuring layers of fresh black and blue fruits and gentle herbal accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins, and plenty of freshness, finishing long and minerally.
Deep garnet-purple in colour, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon sashays out of the glass with open-knit, alluring baked plums, stewed cherries, mulberries, and warm cassis with hints of spice cake, cracked pepper and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a great intensity of black berry and exotic spice layers, framed by soft tannins and lively freshness, finishing with impressive length
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 18 months in 48% new French and American oak and bottled in May/June of 2018. Deep garnet-purple coloured, it sings of crushed blackcurrants, blackberry pie and blueberry compote with suggestions of cigar box, menthol, rose hip tea and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with vibrant black fruit laced with plenty of spicy sparks, framed by grainy tannins and oodles of freshness and finishing long with a menthol kick.
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon saw 18 months in a combination of both French and American casks. This is their biggest cuvée (27,000 cases) and it is a beauty. The 2014 is supple, with silky tannins, dark plum, blackcurrant and liquorice-infused fruit with a touch of spice, a lushness on the attack and mid-palate, and a silky finish. This wine was meant for early drinking, but there is no doubt it has the concentration and overall balance to age nicely for 15-20 years.
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a strong effort from Joseph Phelps and possibly could turn out to be one of the best generic Napa bottlings they have made in many a year. The wine saw about 45% new oak (55% French, 45% American) and is opaque purple in colour, with a classic Cabernet expression of tobacco leaf, blackcurrants, liquorice, and Christmas fruitcake. It is full-bodied, dense, opulent, and concentrated, especially for the introductory Cabernet Sauvignon in the Joseph Phelps stable. No doubt, the fruit coming from 100% estate vineyards has certainly added quality to this offering. This should drink well for up to 20 or more years.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, in what was a generous vintage, yields were surprisingly modest at 2.5 tons of fruit per acre. The wine exhibits a deep ruby/purple colour along with sweet, smoky blackcurrant, unsmoked cigar tobacco and forest floor characteristics. This medium-bodied, elegant, rich wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years.

The 2011 is an attractive, well-made effort for the vintage displaying notions of roasted herbs, red and black currants, loamy soil, and plenty of fruit in a medium-bodied, sensual, silky style.

In 1973, Joseph Phelps turned a 600-acre cattle ranch in Napa Valley into the famous wine estate it is today. He wasted no time and planted 100 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Joseph had the idea of making a separate cuvée each year, one that would represent the finest wine made from each vintage. Whether it is a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Riesling, Insignia is the result of the very best fruit that Joseph Phelps Vineyard produces every year.

Joseph sadly passed away in 2015 and the estate is now run by his son, Bill Phelps.

“He was one of the Valley’s pioneers. Together with Robert Mondavi and others at the time, they put their hands in the soil and their souls in the wine, creating what we have today.” Margrit Mondavi

Today, Insignia is recognised as one of the most iconic wines in the world. In 2002 The Wine Spectator awarded the vintage with the prestigious ‘Wine of the Year’ title and Robert Parker has awarded the 1991, 1997 and 2002 vintages of Insignia with perfect 100 scores.

“The story of Insignia is a reflection of my grandfather’s character. He was a pioneer and an original who didn’t want to do what had already been done. He saw an opportunity to create something very special. With Insignia, he created California’s first proprietary red Bordeaux-style blend.” Elizabeth Neuman, grand-daughter of Joseph Phelps and the winery’s Director of Business Development & Marketing
