Martinborough is a small wine region located in the southern part of New Zealand's North Island, approximately one hour northeast of Wellington. The area sits within the Wairarapa district and has gained recognition as one of New Zealand's premier cool-climate wine regions since commercial viticulture began there in the 1980s. The region's relatively flat terrain is situated on ancient river terraces, with the Rimutaka Mountains providing shelter from prevailing westerly winds.

The climate in Martinborough is notably dry and continental, receiving less rainfall than many other New Zealand wine regions due to its rain shadow position behind the Rimutaka and Tararua mountain ranges. The region experiences significant diurnal temperature variation, with warm days and cool nights during the growing season. The soils are predominantly free-draining alluvial gravels over clay subsoils, similar in structure to some areas of Burgundy, which contributes to the region's suitability for cool-climate varieties.
