Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil lead and licorice, the 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish with a very civilized expression of Moulis-typical grip. Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two.
The 2014 Chasse-Spleen has an attractive bouquet, one that is more forward than I expected, replete with brambly red berry fruit, pain grillé and brown spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and commendable weight. It perhaps does not quite deliver the freshness and precision I was anticipating after its primeur showing, although I appreciate the tangy marmalade note that complements the black fruit on the structured finish. One to watch.
The 2013 Chasse-Spleen has a reserved nose of raspberry, cranberry leaf and cedar, a hint of cola in the background with earthy tones becoming more evident with aeration. The palate is medium bodied with chewy red berry fruit, tertiary in style with a rather lean, herbaceous finish that has decent length if not the requisite substance for a wine of this pedigree.
Made of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet colored 2010 Chasse-Spleen gives up notes of stewed plums, baked blackcurrants and blackberry compote with hints of wild sage, leather and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the fruit is drying just slightly on the palate, and it has a sturdy frame of chewy tannins, finishing herbal.
A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, this is a relatively big 2005 and somewhat larger than usual for Chasse-Spleen. The wine offers high tannin but ripe, concentrated fruit. Dense, youthful ruby/garnet in colour, with notes of cassis, saddle leather and spice, this wine could use another several years of cellaring and should keep 15+ years.
