Istria is a heart-shaped peninsula in the northern Adriatic, shared between Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The Croatian portion, known as Istarska, represents the country's most internationally recognized wine region. This coastal area has produced wine since Roman times, benefiting from its strategic location where Mediterranean influences meet continental European winemaking traditions.
The peninsula enjoys a Mediterranean climate moderated by the Adriatic Sea, with warm summers and mild winters. The diverse terroir includes red terra rossa soils inland, derived from limestone bedrock, and gray soils closer to the coast. This geological variety, combined with rolling hills that provide excellent vineyard exposition, creates distinct microclimates across relatively short distances.
Malvasia Istriana dominates white wine production and represents the region's most distinctive variety, producing wines ranging from fresh and mineral to more complex, oak-aged expressions. International varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc also perform well here. For reds, the local Teran grape produces earthy, food-friendly wines, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other Bordeaux varieties have found success in the warmer inland sites. Croatian Istria has gained recognition for combining indigenous varieties with international grapes, creating a unique regional identity.
