Holdvolgy is a wine producer based in the Tokaji region of Hungary, specializing in the area's traditional sweet dessert wines. The Tokaji region, located in northeastern Hungary near the Slovak border, has been producing sweet wines for centuries and is recognized as one of the world's premier dessert wine regions.
The Tokaji region's unique microclimate, created by the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers, generates morning mists that promote the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, on the grapes. This fungus concentrates the sugars and flavors in the berries, creating the foundation for Tokaji's legendary sweet wines. The traditional Puttonyos system measures sweetness levels, with higher numbers indicating greater residual sugar and intensity.
Holdvolgy currently produces Tokaji Aszú wines using the traditional Tokaji blend of grape varieties, which typically includes Furmint, Hárslevelű, and sometimes Sárgamuskotály. Their portfolio includes 6 Puttonyos level wines, representing a rich, complex style with significant sweetness balanced by the natural acidity characteristic of quality Tokaji wines.
