Famille Perrin is a wine producer based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône Valley. The house produces wines across multiple appellations in the region, including their flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings and wines under the La Vieille Ferme label, which extends their range to other Rhône and Provence terroirs such as Côtes du Rhône, Ventoux, and Luberon.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known for full-bodied red wines built primarily on Grenache, often complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other southern Rhône varieties. The appellation's stony terrain (the name refers to the Pope's new castle) provides distinctive mineral character and forces vines to develop deep root systems. The broader La Vieille Ferme range demonstrates the versatility of these southern French terroirs across different elevation and soil types, producing reds, rosés, and whites that reflect the Mediterranean climate and classic Rhône blending traditions.

The current range emphasizes Grenache-based blends across red and rosé formats, alongside white wines built from Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, and other white varieties typical to the region. The consistency across multiple vintages and appellations reflects a house approach that prioritizes expression of place and traditional varietal combinations rather than single-varietal focus.

In de Rhônevallei wordt al meer dan 500 jaar wijn geproduceerd, waarvan sommige wijngaarden tot de oudste van Frankrijk behoren. De riviervallei verbreedt zich ten zuiden van Valence tot in het Côtes du Rhône-gebied op de winderige alluviale vlaktes en de lagere hellingen van de heuvels. De beste wijndorpen van de Côtes du Rhône zijn gepromoot tot hun eigen appellations - Vinsobres, Vacqueyras - die qua kwaliteit dicht in de buurt komen van de bekendere Gigondas.

De koning van de zuidelijke Rhône is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Hier vormen de galets roulés, ronde rotsen uit de oude rivierbedding, de context voor glorieus rijke rode wijnen die geuren naar de hitte en kruiden van het zuiden, en versterkt worden door de complexiteit die ontstaat door het mengen van verschillende druivensoorten. In totaal zijn er dertien toegestaan, maar Grenache domineert meestal, samen met Syrah en Mourvèdre ter ondersteuning. Een goede vintage heeft acht tot tien jaar keldering nodig voor de beste resultaten.

Als u meer van vollere, rijkere en relatief exotische witte wijnen houdt, dan past een witte Hermitage of Châteauneuf-du-Pape uit de Rhônevallei wellicht beter bij u. Of een heerlijk geurende, bedwelmende Condrieu, het hoofdkwartier van de Viognier-druif.

Côtes du Rhône is the largest and most widely recognized appellation in France's Rhône Valley, stretching along both banks of the Rhône River from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south. Established as an AOC in 1937, this appellation covers approximately 44,000 hectares across six départements, making it one of France's most extensive wine regions. The appellation encompasses vineyards in both the Northern and Southern Rhône, though the vast majority of production occurs in the warmer southern sections.

The appellation permits 21 grape varieties, with red wines dominating production at around 95 percent of total output. Grenache serves as the primary grape for reds, often blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre to add structure and complexity. The Mediterranean climate in the south provides warm, dry summers with the mistral wind helping to prevent disease and concentrate flavors. Soils vary considerably across the region, from granite and schist in some areas to clay-limestone and galets roulés (rounded river stones) that retain heat and aid ripening. White wines, though less common, typically feature Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Viognier.

Côtes du Rhône wines are characterized by their approachable, fruit-forward style that emphasizes immediate drinking pleasure rather than long-term aging potential. Red wines typically display ripe red fruit flavors with herbal notes from the garrigue landscape, moderate tannins, and alcohol levels that reflect the warm growing conditions. The wines offer reliable quality at accessible price points, representing the foundational style of Rhône Valley winemaking without the intensity or complexity of the region's cru appellations.
