Falanghina

Falanghina is an ancient white grape native to Campania in southern Italy, with roots in the volcanic soils of the Sannio region near Benevento. The variety has been cultivated in Campania for centuries, though it nearly disappeared during the phylloxera crisis and the agricultural upheavals of the 20th century. Revival efforts in recent decades have restored Falanghina to its former importance, and it is now legally protected under the Falanghina del Sannio DOC designation, which defines both the geographic origin and production standards for wines made from this grape.

Falanghina wines are characterised by good acidity and a mineral-driven profile shaped by the volcanic terroir where the grape thrives. The flavour spectrum typically includes citrus, white stone fruit, and herbal notes, with a lean to medium body and crisp finish. The wines are generally intended for relatively early consumption, though quality examples can develop complexity with a few years of bottle age. Mineral intensity and salinity are hallmark features, particularly in wines from Sannio's volcanic zones.

The Sannio district in Campania remains the primary—and legally defined—home for Falanghina production. The grape's natural acidity and mineral character make it a natural pairing with seafood, particularly shellfish and white fish preparations, as well as with light vegetable-based dishes and aged cheeses. Falanghina also works well as an aperitif wine or alongside Mediterranean cuisine more broadly.
