Bruichladdich - Octomore Edition 14.2 - Super Heavily Peated Single Malt
Bruichladdich makes Octomore Edition 14.2 on Islay, off Scotland's west coast. It is a super heavily peated single malt Scotch whisky from the Octomore series, bottled at 58.4% ABV.
Smoke leads, dense and intense, but it sits on sweet malt rather than bare ash. Coastal, maritime notes run through the middle, with layers of fruit and vanilla from cask maturation. The palate is big and warming, with smoke and sweetness running together.
As a single malt, it is made from malted barley at one distillery. The barley is dried over peat smoke, which is where the phenols come from, and Octomore is built around exceptionally high levels of them. Islay adds the briny, coastal edge, while cask maturation rounds the smoke with vanilla and fruit.
Pour it neat, and add a few drops of water at this strength to soften the smoke and open the fruit. Bartenders can use it as the smoky backbone of The Octane Smoke, the signature cocktail.
