Lombardy is located in northern Italy, stretching from the Alps to the Po River valley, with Milan as its capital. The region ranks among Italy's most important wine-producing areas, encompassing diverse terroirs from Alpine foothills to lakeside vineyards around Lake Garda and Lake Iseo. While historically overshadowed by Piedmont and Tuscany, Lombardy has gained international recognition particularly for its sparkling wine production in the Franciacorta zone.
The region's continental climate features warm summers and cold winters, moderated by the lakes and Alpine influences. The varied topography creates distinct microclimates, from the glacial moraines and limestone soils of Franciacorta to the volcanic soils near Lake Garda. Key appellations include Franciacorta DOCG, renowned for traditional method sparkling wines, and Valtellina DOCG in the Alpine north, famous for Nebbiolo-based reds called Chiavennasca locally.
Lombardy produces wines from both international and indigenous grape varieties. Franciacorta relies primarily on Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and Pinot Bianco for its metodo classico sparkling wines, which undergo secondary fermentation in bottle similar to Champagne. The region also produces notable still wines, including Chardonnay-based whites in areas like Curtefranca DOC. What distinguishes Lombardy is its combination of modern winemaking techniques with traditional methods, particularly evident in the precision and elegance of its sparkling wine production.
