Domaine Berthenet is a well-regarded wine estate located in the Montagny appellation within the Côte Chalonnaise, a sub-region of Burgundy, France. The Berthenet family has been involved in winemaking since the 16th century, but the modern winery was established more recently by the family. Today, it is run by François Berthenet, who represents the fourth generation of his family to manage the domaine.

Specializing in white wines made from Chardonnay, Domaine Berthenet produces Montagny wines that are known for their purity, finesse, and mineral character. The Montagny appellation is exclusively for white wines, and the wines from this region are celebrated for their vibrant acidity and freshness, which make them particularly food-friendly and suitable for aging.

The domaine covers about 23 hectares of vineyards, with a significant portion in Premier Cru sites. These vineyards are farmed with sustainable practices to ensure the health of the vineyard and surrounding environment. The commitment to minimal intervention in both vineyard and winery helps to ensure that the wines express the unique terroir of Montagny.

François Berthenet focuses on precise vinification techniques, including controlled fermentations and careful aging, often in a mix of stainless steel and oak to maintain the characteristic freshness of the wines while adding complexity and texture.

Domaine Berthenet has gained a reputation for producing consistently high-quality wines that offer excellent value, showcasing the potential of Montagny and the skill of a dedicated winemaking family.

Chardonnay es la uva principal para vinos blancos en Borgoña, representando el 48% de las vides y el 68% de la producción. Chardonnay aprecia el suelo de marga de Borgoña, que le da aromas florales delicados, de frutas y minerales y sabores de cuerpo completo. Aligoté es la segunda uva blanca, representando el 6% cultivado. {Lea más sobre la antigua uva Aligoté en Borgoña.}

Mercurey is an appellation located in the Côte Chalonnaise subregion of Burgundy, France. It sits between the more famous Côte d'Or to the north and the Mâconnais to the south, positioned around the commune of Mercurey in the Saône-et-Loire department. The appellation was granted AOC status in 1936 and is one of the most significant red wine appellations in the Côte Chalonnaise.

The vineyard sites are planted primarily on limestone-rich soils with clay and marl deposits, benefiting from a continental climate with moderate rainfall. Pinot Noir dominates the plantings, accounting for the vast majority of production, though small amounts of Chardonnay are also permitted. The appellation includes 32 Premier Cru vineyards, which represent some of the best-exposed slopes with optimal drainage and sun exposure. Traditional Burgundian winemaking methods are employed, with an emphasis on expressing the terroir characteristics of individual vineyard sites.

Mercurey red wines typically display the classic Burgundian character of Pinot Noir but often with more structure and earthiness compared to wines from the Côte d'Or. They exhibit red berry fruit flavors, often accompanied by notes of forest floor, leather, and spice. The wines generally show good acidity and moderate tannins, making them approachable in their youth while also having the potential to develop complexity with several years of cellaring.
