ietti has the enormous advantage of 10 MGA sites at its disposition for blending purposes (and for making single-vineyard wines). This allows them to select the fruit they want to best express any one vintage. The 2018 Barolo Castiglione draws upon those 10 sites (including the recent additions of Mosconi, Ginestra, Bricco Ravera and Briccolina) to make what is ultimately its best-selling wine (with 35,000 bottles released). This classic rendition is tonic and clean with varietal tones of wild berry, rose and rusty nail.
This is the most accessible Barolo from Vietti and the wine that casts the biggest net in terms of fruit sourcing from across many MGA sites. The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is a layered and generous wine that reflects the main takeaways offered by this very successful vintage. In fact, because this wine is not from a single site, it speaks more to the quality of the vintage than it does to any one specific vineyard. The Castiglione reveals generous richness and concentrated cherry fruit with dark saturation and good structure that comes from the thicker skins developed on Nebbiolo grapes this year. It concludes with a salty mineral note that adds focus and elegance.
This is one of the most versatile wines to emerge from Italy in recent years. A bread and butter winner for Vietti, the 2017 Barolo Castiglione is sharply contoured and bright, with an excellent quality of fruit that can be described as crisp, tonic and rich. That extra concentration comes in part from the hot vintage; however, the greater Castiglione growing area delivers consistent quality and persistence above all else.
"This is a terrific and flexible expression of Nebbiolo that can adopt to almost any dinner party setting. The 2014 Barolo Castiglione was designed for people who want to enjoy Barolo in an easy and direct manner. This Barolo is offered at higher production numbers, although this vintage is comparatively smaller. On average they make anywhere from 44,000 to 53,000 bottles, but in 2014 only 35,000 bottles were produced. The bouquet here is generous and broad with dark fruit, spice and tar. You even get a touch of citrus or dried orange peel. The mouthfeel is a bit thinner and more delicate in this vintage. Yet the tannins leave a firm footprint and promise a good aging future ahead."
