Sec

Sec is a French term meaning "dry" that indicates the sweetness level in Champagne and other sparkling wines. In Champagne classification, Sec contains between 17-32 grams of residual sugar per liter, making it noticeably sweeter than Brut styles but drier than Demi-Sec. This sweetness level is achieved through the dosage process, where a mixture of wine and sugar is added after disgorgement to balance the wine's natural acidity.

Sec Champagnes present a rounded, approachable character with sufficient sweetness to soften the wine's natural acidity while maintaining freshness. The residual sugar enhances fruit flavors and creates a fuller mouthfeel, making these wines more immediately accessible than their drier counterparts. The sweetness level complements the traditional Champagne blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, allowing each grape's characteristics to express themselves in a harmonious, fruit-forward profile.

While less common than Brut styles, Sec Champagnes are produced by major houses in the region. Some producers create modern interpretations designed for specific serving occasions, such as wines meant to be served over ice or with mixers, which benefit from the slightly higher sugar content to maintain balance when diluted.
