Arneis is a white grape native to Piedmont in northwestern Italy, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The name derives from the Piedmontese dialect and roughly translates to "little rascal," a reference to the grape's notoriously thin skin and difficulty in the vineyard. Nearly extinct by the mid-20th century, the variety was rescued from obscurity by producers in the Roero district who recognized its potential and replanted vineyards beginning in the 1960s and 1970s. Today it remains primarily associated with this region, though small plantings exist elsewhere in Italy and beyond.
Arneis produces dry white wines with moderate alcohol levels and a characteristically lean, mineral-driven profile. The wines typically display citrus and stone fruit aromas—lemon, green apple, and sometimes peach—alongside herbal and floral notes. The grape's thin skin results in wines with good acidity and delicate body, with a subtle bitter almond finish that is often considered a signature trait. These are food-friendly wines rather than powerful expressions, marked by precision and freshness rather than weight or richness.
The Roero DOCG in Piedmont remains the primary and finest expression of Arneis. The region's sandy, clay-rich soils and cool continental climate create ideal conditions for the variety. These wines pair well with seafood, light pasta dishes, risotto, and fresh cheeses. Their acidity and mineral character make them particularly suited to matching with lighter preparations and dishes where delicacy is desired. Arneis has developed a dedicated following among those seeking elegant Italian white wines with distinct regional character.
