Chasselas

Chasselas is a white grape variety with origins in the Lake Geneva region, straddling Switzerland and France. It has been cultivated in this area for centuries and remains deeply associated with Swiss viticulture, particularly in the Valais region where it flourishes in the Alpine climate. The grape's ability to thrive in cool conditions and steep vineyard terroirs has made it a cornerstone of Swiss wine production, though it is also grown in eastern France, parts of Germany, and historically in other European wine regions.

Chasselas produces light-bodied, dry white wines with delicate citrus and stone fruit aromas, often accompanied by floral and mineral notes. The wines typically display high acidity and a subtle, refined palate with little tannin structure. While Chasselas wines are generally meant for early consumption, traditional Swiss expressions—particularly from old vines in Valais—can develop greater complexity and aging potential. The variety is valued for its purity and ability to express terroir clearly rather than for bold fruit character or concentration.

In Switzerland, Chasselas is enjoyed primarily as an everyday table wine, though serious producers craft age-worthy versions from established vineyards. The wine pairs well with light dishes, fresh seafood, and Alpine cheeses. Chasselas remains relatively rare outside its core regions, making Swiss examples particularly important for understanding the variety's authentic expression in its most suitable climate and soil conditions.
