The Guado al Tasso 2017 Bolgheri Rosso Cont'Ugo is a pure expression of Merlot that has absorbed the ripeness and softness of this hot vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc have a proven track record in these ever-more frequent warm vintages along the Tuscan coast, but early-ripening Merlot can sometimes come off as too ripe and jammy. This wine walks a fine line, and although it never shows excessive softness, you have to wonder how much further it can be pushed in light of climate change. Dark cherry and blackberry preserves cede to cedar and baking spice. The mouthfeel is round, soft and creamy.
The 2015 Bolgheri Rosso Cont'Ugo is a soft and luscious Merlot from the Tuscan Coast. The wine is generous and bright, showing the full range of cherry and dark fruit exuberance you can expect of this grape in a sunny and warm vintage like 2015. The wine offers lovely softness and fruity sweetness that wraps thickly over the palate. You'd do well to pair this bright Tuscan red with grilled meats or oven-roasted lasagna. The mid-weight finish is bright and moderate length. This wine offers broad-based appeal.
The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Cont'Ugo is an easy-drinking expression of Merlot with bright berry and cherry aromas that emerge first from the bouquet. On second nose, the wine shows spice and dried tobacco leaf. All said and done, this is a fantastic wine to pair with oven-roasted pasta or grilled meat dishes.
