Made from a blend of 71% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier, the 2019 Chocolate Block begins with a broad, juicy nose of spiced plum, blackberry compote, fresh cracked black peppercorn, dusty purple flowers and hints of baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the wine initially expresses fresh, ripe and juicy dark fruit tones with an undercurrent of black and red spice before firm tannins grip the gumline. The wine concludes with a dusty and spicy finish and a lingering tannic edge. The wine spent 13 to 16 months in barrels before being blended. Almost 250,000 bottles were filled.
The 2018 Chocolate Block begins with a delightfully expressive nose that bursts with red and black berry essence, chocolate ganache and seductive oak tones. Aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, dark cherry skin, dusty plum, black pepper, sweet tobacco, and baked clay all sing in unison in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is expressive as it unpacks layers across the mid-palate, showing a beautifully balanced structure and chassis that holds its bold frame. Dusty flavours of bitter dark chocolate, black tea and dusty black raspberry sway with a mineral tension and oak essence on the long, lingering finish. This is delicious and is another successful Chocolate Block for the books.
The 2017 Chocolate Block is dense, rich and fully complex. The nose is filled with red and black fruits and black spices, with well-integrated oak tones of vanilla and nutmeg. There is an underlying minerality about the wine as well. On the palate, the wine is bold and chewy with a tight mineral and tannic grip. The mid-palate is loaded with blackberries, black pepper, dark chocolate, and dusty plum. The finish is long and delivers a focused expression of a serious wine and will need time to age, or you will have to enjoy it with a hearty meal to tame the tannins. The full-bodied wine ends with a long finish.

It has an attractive blackberry, cedar and dark chocolate scented bouquet, strangely the Cabernet Sauvignon making a big impression upon the Syrah. The palate is medium-bodied and quite austere compared for this label, tightly wound at first with a slightly attenuated finish.
