El Enemigo

El Enemigo is a renowned wine producer located in the Mendoza region of Argentina. Founded in 2009 by renowned winemaker Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena, daughter of wine pioneer Nicolas Catena, El Enemigo has quickly become known for its exceptional quality wines and unique approach to winemaking.

The name "El Enemigo", which translates to "the enemy", reflects the winery's philosophy of constantly challenging and pushing the boundaries of traditional winemaking. This rebellious attitude is reflected in their wines, which are a fusion of old and new world techniques, resulting in complex and distinctive flavors.

The Mendoza region, located at the foot of the Andes mountains, is known for its high altitude vineyards and ideal growing conditions for wine grapes. El Enemigo's vineyards are located in the Gualtallary sub-region, which is known for its rocky soils and cool temperatures, ensuring slow ripening of the grapes and producing wines with intense flavors and aromas.

El Enemigo produces a range of wines, including Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay, all of which have received critical acclaim and high ratings from wine experts. Their flagship wine, the Gran Enemigo, is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, and has consistently been awarded high scores by top wine publications.

In addition to their exceptional wines, El Enemigo also offers a unique wine experience through their "Enemigo Tour". This personalized tour allows guests to explore the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and taste their wines paired with locally sourced food.

El Enemigo's commitment to quality and creativity has earned them a loyal following among wine enthusiasts and critics alike. Their wines have been described as bold, elegant, and distinct, making them a must-try for any wine lover.

El Enemigo

El Enemigo is an Argentine wine project based in the Uco Valley, a high-altitude subregion of Mendoza situated at the foot of the Andes. The project is associated with winemaker Adrián Manchón and has become known for producing wines that reflect the distinctive terroir of this elevated growing area, where vineyards typically sit between 900 and 1,200 metres above sea level.

The Uco Valley's combination of altitude, intense solar radiation, significant diurnal temperature variation, and well-drained alluvial and sandy-loam soils produces wines with pronounced freshness and structure alongside ripe fruit concentration. These conditions are particularly well suited to Bordeaux varieties, which retain natural acidity at elevation in ways that lower-altitude Mendoza sites do not always permit. The philosophy at El Enemigo centres on expressing site character rather than relying on heavy extraction or oak treatment.

The flagship Gran Enemigo is a Bordeaux-inspired blend drawing on Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Franc plays a prominent role in this wine, which is notable given that Malbec dominates the broader Mendoza landscape. The inclusion of multiple Bordeaux varieties allows the blend to be composed according to vintage conditions, giving the winemaking team flexibility to prioritise whichever grape performed best in a given year.
