Domaine de l'Ecu
Domaine de l'Ecu is a renowned wine producer located in the Loire Valley region of France. Situated in the small village of Le Landreau, the estate has been producing exceptional organic and biodynamic wines since 1975.
The estate covers a total of 24 hectares, with 5 hectares dedicated to the production of Muscadet, 17 hectares for white wines, and 2 hectares for red wines. The vineyards are cultivated using traditional and sustainable methods, with a strong focus on respecting the environment and the natural balance of the terroir. This dedication to organic and biodynamic practices has earned Domaine de l'Ecu the coveted Demeter certification, making it one of the few biodynamic wineries in the region.
The estate produces a range of wines, from the classic Muscadet to more unique blends and single varietal wines. Their Muscadet is made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, which is hand-harvested and aged on its lees for a minimum of 12 months, resulting in a complex and full-bodied wine. Other white wines produced by Domaine de l'Ecu include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, each showcasing the unique characteristics of the terroir and the grapes.
In addition to their white wines, Domaine de l'Ecu also produces a small range of red wines, made from Gamay and Cabernet Franc grapes. These wines are aged in oak barrels, adding layers of complexity and depth to the final product.
One of the unique features of Domaine de l'Ecu is their commitment to using only natural yeasts in their winemaking process. This allows the natural expression of the grapes and the terroir to shine through in each bottle, resulting in wines that are truly reflective of their origin.
The wines of Domaine de l'Ecu have gained international recognition and have been awarded numerous prestigious accolades, including being named "
Domaine de l'Ecu
Domaine de l'Ecu is a wine producer based in the Loire Valley of France, operating under the Vin de France appellation. The domaine has long been associated with biodynamic viticulture and a commitment to minimal intervention in both the vineyard and cellar. Labelling wines as Vin de France, rather than under a more specific Loire appellation, gives the producer flexibility to work outside the constraints of regional classification rules.
The domaine's approach to winemaking tends toward natural methods, with little or no added sulphur and indigenous yeast fermentations. Their orange wines are produced through extended skin contact with white grapes, a technique that extracts tannins, colour, and textural complexity not typically found in conventionally made whites. The resulting wines are often structured and oxidative in character, with a depth that rewards attention.
Their "Faust" is made from Chardonnay vinified as an orange wine, an unconventional choice for the variety, which is more commonly fermented without skin contact. The Vin de France designation on this wine reflects its departure from appellation norms rather than any compromise in quality or identity.
