Château Cos D'Estournel

Château Cos D'Estournel is a prestigious wine producer located in the Saint-Estèphe region of Bordeaux, France. It is situated on the Left Bank of the Gironde River, which is known for producing some of the finest and most sought-after wines in the world.

The estate of Château Cos D'Estournel dates back to the 18th century, when it was founded by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, d'Estournel was one of the first wine producers in Bordeaux to ship his wines directly to the United Kingdom and India, establishing a loyal following in these markets. This international reputation earned the estate the nickname "The Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe."

Today, Château Cos D'Estournel is owned by the Michel Reybier family, who purchased the estate in 2000. The Reybiers have continued the tradition of producing exceptional wines, while also implementing sustainable and organic practices in the vineyards.

The vineyards of Château Cos D'Estournel span over 91 hectares, with the majority of the vines being Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and the rest being Merlot (40%). The vineyards are divided into different plots, each with their own unique terroir, allowing for a diverse range of wines to be produced.

The wines of Château Cos D'Estournel are classified as a Second Growth in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux Classification. This classification ranks the top Bordeaux wines based on their quality and reputation, with First Growths being the most highly regarded. However, Château Cos D'Estournel is often referred to as a "Super Second," as its wines are often on par with those of First Growths.

Château Cos D'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel is a red wine producer located in Saint-Estèphe, the northernmost of the four principal Médoc communes. The estate sits on a gravel ridge immediately south of the Gironde's tributary streams, bordering Pauillac, and was classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It is among the most recognisable properties in Saint-Estèphe, partly due to its distinctive pagoda-topped chai that reflects the estate's historical connections to trade with the East.

Saint-Estèphe is characterised by heavier clay soils than its southern Médoc neighbours, which gives its wines a firmer tannic structure, naturally higher acidity, and a tendency toward slower development. The appellation produces red wines built primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot playing a significant supporting role. These structural qualities make Saint-Estèphe wines well suited to extended cellaring, and they typically display dark fruit, earth, and tobacco characters as they age.

Les Pagodes de Cos is the estate's second wine, drawing on younger vines and declassified lots from the grand vin selection. It is assembled from the same varieties cultivated at the estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and offers an earlier-drinking expression of the Saint-Estèphe appellation while retaining the structured character associated with the property.
