Jean Macle
Jean Macle is a highly respected wine producer hailing from the Jura region in eastern France. The Macle family has been producing wines in the Jura for generations, with Jean Macle himself taking over the family business in 1970.
Located between the prestigious wine regions of Burgundy and Switzerland, the Jura may often be overlooked, but it is home to some of the most unique and distinctive wines in France. This is thanks in part to its cool climate and diverse terroir, which allows for a wide range of grape varieties to thrive.
Jean Macle specializes in producing wines from the traditional Jura grapes, including Chardonnay, Savagnin, and Poulsard. However, it is their expertise in the production of Vin Jaune that truly sets them apart. Vin Jaune, or "yellow wine," is a unique style of wine made from the Savagnin grape and aged for at least six years in oak barrels. This extended aging process gives the wine a distinctive nutty, oxidative character that is unlike any other wine in the world.
In addition to Vin Jaune, Jean Macle also produces a range of other Jura wines, including Chardonnay and Savagnin blends, as well as red wines made from the Poulsard and Trousseau grapes. All of their wines are made using traditional, sustainable methods, with a focus on showcasing the unique terroir of the Jura.
The Jura region is also known for its production of the fortified wine Vin de Paille, and Jean Macle is one of the top producers of this style. Made from a blend of dried grapes, Vin de Paille is a sweet and complex wine with notes of dried fruits, honey, and nuts.
The wines of Jean Macle have received numerous awards and accolades, solidifying their reputation as one of the top producers in the region. Their wines can be found in top restaurants and wine shops around the world, and Onshore Cell
Jean Macle
Jean Macle is a domaine based in Château-Chalon, in the Jura region of eastern France, operating within the Côtes du Jura appellation. The estate is one of the most respected names in the Jura, particularly associated with the traditional winemaking practices that define this part of France. The domaine produces white wines, and has long been connected to the oxidative style for which the Jura is internationally recognized.
The Côtes du Jura appellation covers a broad stretch of the Jura's vineyard area along the western foothills of the Jura mountains. The region is best known for wines made from Savagnin, Chardonnay, and Poulsard, with Savagnin being the grape most associated with the vin jaune style, wines aged under a film of yeast called voile in old barrels, producing the oxidative, nutty, complex character that sets Jura whites apart from those of any other French region. Jean Macle's white wines in the Côtes du Jura appellation sit within this broader tradition, with the domaine historically regarded as a benchmark producer for this style.
The inventory includes vintages from both 2003 and 2017, two years with markedly different growing conditions, 2003 being an extremely hot and dry European summer, 2017 a more typical but quality-driven Jura vintage. This span reflects the ageability that is characteristic of oxidative Jura whites, which often develop further complexity over decades in bottle.
