Dominated by dark notes of espresso, black olive and pumpernickel, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Mouline was missing the vineyard's normally expressive floral aromas on this occasion. Full-bodied and rich, it's an atypically muscular and closed vintage of La Mouline right now. It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years of élevage.
The 2017 Cote Rotie La Mouline has developed quickly and is already approachable - although I wouldn't be surprised to see it close down shortly, only to emerge even better a decade from now. Complex, charming scents of jasmine, sandalwood, raspberries and stone fruit appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky-textured, with a long, plush finish.

The 2012 Côte Rôtie La Mouline reminds me of the 2011 with its upfront, incredibly perfumed nose of spring flowers, cured meats, roasted herbs, olives and sweet cassis fruit. Full-bodied, beautifully textured, mouth-filling and already impossible to resist, it expands on the palate and I guarantee this beauty will put a smile on your face anytime over the coming two decades.

Another ridiculous effort, the 2005 Cote Rotie la Mouline doesn’t pull any punches and is perfectly balanced, deeply concentrated and shockingly rich, with a seamless, elegant and silky character that’s to die for. Giving up notions of smoked beef, iron, spring flowers and thrilling black raspberry and blackberry fruit, this classic La Mouline has nothing out of place, beautiful purity and precision, and incredible length. More in the style of the 2010, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 2-3 decades.
A textbook example of the cuvee that possesses a classy, focused, and tight profile, the 2001 Cote Rotie La Mouline gives up plenty of vibrant berry fruits, pepper, herbed crusted game and bacon fat to go with a medium to full-bodied, juicy, fresh and pure profile on the palate. The amount of acid here gives me a slight pause, yet it has solid mid-palate depth, beautiful polished its tannin, and no shortage of length on the finish. Give it 2 to 3 years and drink it over the following decade or more.

The Northern Rhône wine region exploded in popularity in the mid 80’s and it was really down to two people, Etienne Guigal and Robert Parker. Etienne took over the vineyard in 1946, but it was his promotional efforts of the region combined with Robert Parker that put his wine on the map. Soon the Rhône Valley became famous as a wine region producing some of the most seductively elegant and aromatic wines in the world, Guigal’s Côte Rôtie being one of them.

E.Guigal is truly a family business with Marcel, Etienne’s son, taking over the business in 1961 with the help of wife Bernadette and today their son Phillipe and wife Eve represent the third generation of this iconic property.

Im Rhônetal wird seit über 500 Jahren Wein angebaut, und einige der Weinberge gehören zu den ältesten Frankreichs. Im Süden herrscht Syrah mit einer Mischung aus mediterranen Rebsorten vor, während im Norden die beiden Stars Hermitage - der auf einem imposanten Granithügel oberhalb der Stadt Tain angebaut wird und am besten ein Jahrzehnt lang im Keller ruht - und Côte-Rôtie sind, eine Star-Appellation, die durch die Einzellagenweine von Guigal berühmt wurde, aber auch Dutzende feiner Erzeuger beherbergt, die noch weniger bekannt sind. Die steilen Hänge über dem Fluss müssen terrassiert werden, um die Produktion zu ermöglichen.

St. Joseph und Cornas bieten ebenfalls Weine von Gewicht und Wert, aber die beste Quelle für ein gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist Crozes-Hermitage, eine Satelliten-Appellation, die in den letzten Jahren durch die Ankunft von jungem Blut zu neuem Leben erwacht ist.

Das Flusstal weitet sich südlich von Valence zu den Côtes du Rhône auf den windigen Schwemmlandebenen und an den unteren Hängen der Hügel aus. Bei kühlem, klarem, blauem Himmel und Mistral ist dies ein beeindruckender Anblick. Die besten Weindörfer der Côtes du Rhône wurden zu eigenen Appellationen ernannt - Vinsobres, Vacqueyras - die in ihrer Qualität dem bekannteren Gigondas nahe kommen.

Der König der südlichen Rhône ist Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Hier bilden die "galets roulés", abgerundete Felsen aus dem alten Flussbett, den Rahmen für herrlich gehaltvolle Rotweine, die nach der Wärme und den Kräutern des Südens duften und durch die Komplexität, die sich aus dem Verschnitt mehrerer Rebsorten ergibt, noch verstärkt werden. Insgesamt sind dreizehn Rebsorten zugelassen, aber in der Regel dominiert die Grenache, unterstützt von Syrah und Mourvèdre. Ein guter Jahrgang braucht acht bis 10 Jahre Lagerzeit, um die besten Ergebnisse zu erzielen.

Wenn Sie vollere, reichhaltigere, relativ exotische Weißweine bevorzugen, dann wäre vielleicht ein weißer Hermitage oder Châteauneuf-du-Pape aus dem Rhônetal besser geeignet, oder ein wunderbar duftender, berauschender Condrieu - Hauptsitz der Viognier-Traube.
