The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is showing beautifully from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums, sweet soil tones and subtle spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, it's one of the more tightly wound wines in the range, with powdery structuring tannins, lively acids, and a long, penetrating finish.
The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is already extremely charming, bursting from the glass with a lavish bouquet of cassis, dried rose petals, coniferous forest floor and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple, and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, a nicely concentrated core of fruit and lively acids, concluding with a precise, vibrant finish.
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is lovely, wafting from the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of wild berries, forest floor, potpourri, and a subtle framing of new cedar wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad, and satiny, with beautifully powdery tannins cloaked in cool, succulent fruit, concluding with a long finish. Right now, this is quite reserved, but its structural finesse and harmony are already impressive.
The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is showing well, opening in the glass with a complex bouquet of smoked meats, hoisin, wild berry fruit and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, delicate, and precise, with racy acids, powdery tannins and impressive concentration despite its fine-boned format, and its sappy expression of fruit is complemented by considerable savoury nuance, concluding with a sappy finish.

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, perpetuating tradition for nearly 3 centuries and 9 generations. In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyards in Volnay in the famous “Les Caillerets” climat and started to develop the family’s vineyard holdings.

During the French Revolution, property belonging to the clergy and nobility was confiscated and put up for sale. Joseph’s son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, seized the opportunity to extend the family’s vineyard holdings in Beaune including the famous “Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus.”

This desire to build up an exceptional estate in Côte d’Or endured through the generations and acquisitions in the best Villages were added throughout the 19th century and again in the early 20th century.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

The style of production in Volnay is traditional, with a focus on producing elegant and refined wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region. The vineyards in Volnay are planted on steep slopes, which allows for excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure. The soils in Volnay are primarily composed of limestone and clay, which impart a distinct minerality to the wines.

The primary grape variety grown in Volnay is Pinot Noir, which is known for its delicate aromas and flavors of red fruit, earth, and spice. The wines produced in Volnay are typically light to medium-bodied, with a silky texture and a long, complex finish. One of the most famous wines produced in Volnay is the Premier Cru Les Caillerets, which is known for its intense aromas of red fruit, violets, and spice.
