The Castello Banfi 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura brings that primary intensity up a notch, and the wine shows nicely integrated aromas of spice, cedar, tar and tobacco. The emphasis here is on freshness and linearity—Poggio alle Mura is also distinguished by the sharpness of its fruit—but you get more fruit weight here and a longer, more determined level of power on the lengthy close. Again, the alcohol content of the wine is very high (at 15.5%) in this 33,992-bottle release.
The Castello Banfi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura offers a distinct identity that is recognized by the natural thickness and density of the wine. Warm vintage conditions in 2015 that favour more concentrated fruit make this even more apparent. However, the palate is relatively mild mannered and tight. Black fruit, plum and blackberry roll off the tongue.
Those fruity tones are followed by dark spice, balsam herb and a touch of savoury barbecue spice. Unlike the classic Brunello from Castello Banfi, the Poggio alle Mura sees more contact with French barrique. Only 40% of the total is aged in botte, and 60% goes into smaller French barrels.
The special vineyard selection 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura opens to brooding dark concentration and an impressive sense of depth. The aromas that characterize the wine are in a school of their own. Instead of the standard red cherry and rose, this expression of Sangiovese gives you rich layers of blackberry pie, Indian spice, cured meat, wet terra-cotta, tar, and black liquorice. Some 90% of the wine is aged in French barrique and the remaining portion sees large oak casks made with Slavonian oak.
Dive further and you begin to sense chocolate and toasted espresso. The tannin management is excellent and there's a distant point of textural firmness that will soften with a few more years of cellar aging. Brunello Poggio alle Mura is one of the biggest wines of the vintage, and you can't knock the quality.
