Dominated by dark notes of espresso, black olive and pumpernickel, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Mouline was missing the vineyard's normally expressive floral aromas on this occasion. Full-bodied and rich, it's an atypically muscular and closed vintage of La Mouline right now. It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years of élevage.
The 2017 Cote Rotie La Mouline has developed quickly and is already approachable - although I wouldn't be surprised to see it close down shortly, only to emerge even better a decade from now. Complex, charming scents of jasmine, sandalwood, raspberries and stone fruit appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky-textured, with a long, plush finish.

Full-bodied, beautifully textured, mouth-filling and already impossible to resist, it expands on the palate and I guarantee this beauty will put a smile on your face anytime over the coming two decades.

Another ridiculous effort, the 2005 Cote Rotie la Mouline doesn’t pull any punches and is perfectly balanced, deeply concentrated and shockingly rich, with a seamless, elegant and silky character that’s to die for. Giving up notions of smoked beef, iron, spring flowers and thrilling black raspberry and blackberry fruit, this classic La Mouline has nothing out of place, beautiful purity and precision, and incredible length. More in the style of the 2010, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 2-3 decades.
A textbook example of the cuvee that possesses a classy, focused, and tight profile, the 2001 Cote Rotie La Mouline gives up plenty of vibrant berry fruits, pepper, herbed crusted game and bacon fat to go with a medium to full-bodied, juicy, fresh and pure profile on the palate. The amount of acid here gives me a slight pause, yet it has solid mid-palate depth, beautiful polished its tannin, and no shortage of length on the finish. Give it 2 to 3 years and drink it over the following decade or more.

De Noordelijke Rhône wijnregio explodeerde in populariteit in het midden van de jaren 80 en dat was echt te danken aan twee mensen, Etienne Guigal en Robert Parker. Etienne nam de wijngaard over in 1946, maar het waren zijn promotie-inspanningen voor de regio in combinatie met Robert Parker die zijn wijn op de kaart zetten. Al snel werd de Rhônevallei beroemd als een wijngebied dat enkele van de meest verleidelijk elegante en aromatische wijnen ter wereld produceerde, waaronder Guigal's Côte Rôtie.

E.Guigal is echt een familiebedrijf. Marcel, de zoon van Etienne, nam het bedrijf in 1961 over met de hulp van zijn vrouw Bernadette en vandaag de dag vertegenwoordigen hun zoon Phillipe en vrouw Eve de derde generatie van dit iconische eigendom.

In de Rhônevallei wordt al meer dan 500 jaar wijn gemaakt en sommige wijngaarden behoren tot de oudste van Frankrijk. Syrah heerst in het zuiden met een mix van mediterrane druiven, terwijl in het noorden de twee sterren Hermitage zijn - verbouwd op een imposante granieten heuvel boven de stad Tain en het beste weggestopt in de kelder voor een decennium - en Côte-Rôtie, een ster appellation beroemd gemaakt door Guigal's single-vineyard wijnen, maar ook de thuisbasis van tientallen fijne producenten die nog minder bekend zijn. De steile hellingen die uitkijken over de rivier moeten terrassen worden aangelegd om de productie mogelijk te maken.

St Joseph en Cornas leveren ook wijnen van gewicht en waarde, maar de beste bron voor een goede prijs is Crozes-Hermitage, een satelliet appellatie die de laatste jaren tot leven is gekomen met de komst van jong bloed.

De riviervallei breidt zich ten zuiden van Valence uit naar het Côtes du Rhône-gebied op de winderige alluviale vlakten en de lagere hellingen van de heuvels. Het is een indrukwekkend gezicht tijdens de koude, heldere, blauwe luchten van Mistral. De beste wijndorpen van de Côtes du Rhône zijn gepromoveerd tot hun eigen appellations - Vinsobres, Vacqueyras - die qua kwaliteit dicht in de buurt komen van de bekendere Gigondas.

De koning van de zuidelijke Rhône is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Hier vormen de galets roulés, afgeronde rotsen uit de oude rivierbedding, de context voor heerlijk rijke rode wijnen die de warmte en kruiden van het zuiden uitstralen en die worden versterkt door de complexiteit die ontstaat door het mengen van verschillende druivenrassen. In totaal zijn er dertien toegestaan, maar Grenache domineert meestal, samen met Syrah en Mourvèdre als ondersteuning. Een goed wijnjaar heeft acht tot tien jaar kelder nodig voor de beste resultaten.

Als je voorkeur uitgaat naar vollere, rijkere, relatief exotische witte wijnen, dan past een witte Hermitage of Châteauneuf-du-Pape uit de Rhônevallei misschien beter, of anders een heerlijk geparfumeerde, bedwelmende Condrieu - het hoofdkwartier van de Viognier-druif.
