The 2010 Grands-Echezeaux is totally weightless and beautiful. Crushed flowers, mint and sweet tobacco waft from the glass. The Grands-Echezeaux shows off phenomenal inner perfume and sweetness in a deceptively understated style that is immensely appealing. A seriously long, intense finish rounds things out in style. The 2010 is notable for a level of finesse that isn’t always a signature of this wine.

Unquestionably the finest Echezeaux I have encountered from this famed estate, the 2003 explodes from the glass with candied raspberries, violet, and red cherries. Stunningly marrying elegance with richness and density, this medium to full-bodied wine is ample, pure, and velvety-textured. Loads of sweet red fruits are found in its persistent, sensual character.
The 2002 Echezeaux displays a demure nose of herbal, pepper-laced blackberries. Less generous at this stage than the Vosne, it has a light to medium-bodied character with white pepper, black fruit, and stone flavors. Its long finish reveals highly present, structure-giving tannin.

Ongebruikelijk voor Bourgogne rijpen de wijnen volledig in nieuwe Franse eiken vaten, gedurende zestien tot twintig maanden. Het is ongetwijfeld deze eikenhouten invloed die de wijnen hun diepte en enorm lang rijpingspotentieel geeft. Meerlagig en vol van smaak met een enorme diepte en kracht, en toch de verleidelijke etherische delicatesse van de Bourgogne. Werkelijk subliem.

In veel opzichten is Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, of kortweg DRC, het grootste wijndomein ter wereld dat enkele van de beste (en duurste) wijnen van de Bourgogne produceert.

"Domaine de la Romanée-Conti - de meest geheiligde naam in Bourgondische wijn, en misschien wel in de hele wijnwereld; een naam die impliciet koninklijk is, onbetwistbaar begeerd en moeiteloos tevreden in zijn positie van onberispelijke adel. De geschiedenis draait om het eigendom van de gelijknamige wijngaard. Deze wijngaard, die om onbekende redenen La Romanée werd genoemd, was het onderwerp van een biedingsstrijd tussen Madame Pompadour, de maîtresse van Louis XV, en haar bittere rivaal, de Prins van Conti. Hij won en voegde zijn naam toe aan de overwinning. De Revolutie maakte daar natuurlijk snel een einde aan. Sindsdien is het domein eigendom geweest van een of twee families en meerdere generaties en wordt het nu gerund door Aubert de Villaine en Henri-Frederic Roch.

De wijnen van DRC worden bijna uitsluitend gemaakt van Grand Cru wijngaarden, waaronder de monopole percelen van La Tâche en La Romanée-Conti zelf (waar het domein zijn naam aan ontleent), en bieden een andere dimensie aan Bourgogne.

De Franse wijnstreek Bourgondië (ook wel "Bourgogne" genoemd) mag dan klein zijn in omvang, de invloed ervan is enorm in de wereld van de wijn. De complexiteit van Bourgondië kan zelfs een doorgewinterde wijnprof angst inboezemen, maar vrees niet - de regio hoeft maar zo ingewikkeld te zijn als je zelf wilt. Ja, het is de thuisbasis van enkele van de duurste wijnen in het bekende universum, maar er zijn ook smakelijke en betaalbare wijnen.

Belangrijkste druiven:

Pinot noir komt oorspronkelijk uit de Bourgogne en deze wijnstokken bedekken 34% van de regio, goed voor 29% van de totale wijnproductie. De rode druif doet het uitstekend op kalk- en kleigrond, wat bijdraagt aan de complexiteit. Pinot noir wijnen uit Bourgondië variëren in kleur van kers tot baksteen, hebben een lichte body en hebben meestal rood fruit en kruidige smaken. Gamay is een rode druif die ook aangeplant staat in Bourgondië, maar slechts 10% van de wijnstokken bestaat uit gamay.

Chardonnay is de belangrijkste druif voor witte wijnen in Bourgondië, goed voor 48% van de wijnstokken en 68% van de productie. Chardonnay houdt van de mergelbodem van Bourgondië, die zorgt voor delicate bloemen-, fruit- en mineraalaroma's en een volle smaak. De regio produceert wel een mousserende wijn genaamd Crémant de Bourgogne. Deze kan worden gemaakt van chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot gris, aligoté, gamay, sacy en meloen. Variëteiten zijn onder andere blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs en rosé.
