Montepulciano

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is an Italian red grape variety native to the Adriatic coast regions of central and southern Italy, with its strongest historical ties to Abruzzo. The grape should not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is made from Sangiovese in Tuscany. Archaeological evidence suggests Montepulciano has been cultivated in the Abruzzo region for centuries, where it thrives in the Mediterranean climate and diverse soils ranging from clay to limestone.

Montepulciano produces deeply colored wines with robust tannins and moderate to high acidity. The grape typically yields wines with dark fruit flavors including blackberry, plum, and black cherry, often accompanied by earthy undertones and hints of herbs or spices. These wines generally display medium to full body with good aging potential, developing more complex secondary flavors of leather, tobacco, and dried fruits over time.

Abruzzo remains the most important region for Montepulciano, where it forms the backbone of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC wines. The grape also appears in blends throughout central and southern Italy, including Marche, Molise, and Puglia. Montepulciano wines pair well with robust Italian dishes such as pasta with meat sauces, grilled lamb, aged cheeses, and game meats, making them versatile companions for hearty Mediterranean cuisine.
