Baettig selected the El Triángulo and Llaima Largo plots to produce the Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay because they deliver more vertical, mineral and tense wine to achieve finesse and complexity. The first experimental vinification was 2016. This is super austere, shy and closed, with subtle complexity, not very varietal, more about the soils and the cooler place. 2019 was not a large crop, and the wines have good concentration, a good year in the south. It has good depth, pungent flavors and some nutty, wax and acacia notes, not exuberant or explosive, but elegant and with density and more weight than the 2018, which gives it more depth and layers. This is superb, very complete

Baettig is a boutique wine project established by Francisco Baettig, a prominent figure in the Chilean wine industry, renowned for his role as head winemaker at Viña Errázuriz and his influential contributions to the production of fine Chilean wines. The Baettig project is a personal venture where Francisco collaborates with his wife, Ema Zaror, focusing on crafting premium, limited-production wines that showcase specific terroirs within Chile.

**Focus and Philosophy:**
The Baettig project centers on expressing the unique characteristics of particular vineyard sites in Chile, primarily using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Francisco Baettig’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention and precision winemaking to highlight the purity and expression of the fruit and its origin. This approach is informed by his extensive experience and deep understanding of Chilean terroirs.

**Vineyards and Terroir:**
Baettig wines are sourced from carefully selected vineyards in some of Chile's most esteemed wine regions. Francisco particularly focuses on cooler climates ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, such as the Leyda Valley and Aconcagua Costa. These areas are known for their maritime influence, which provides a longer ripening period and helps maintain the acidity and aromatic complexity of the grapes.

**Wine Styles:**
The wines produced under the Baettig label are characterized by their elegance, finesse, and complexity. The Chardonnays often display a refined minerality and freshness, with a balance of oak influence that complements rather than overshadows the fruit. The Pinot Noirs are noted for their depth, vibrant fruit profile, and silky tannins, reflecting the cool-climate character of their origins.

**Recognition:**
Francisco Baettig’s reputation as a winemaker adds a significant cachet to the Baettig project, which has quickly garnered attention and praise within the wine community for its quality and distinctive approach. His expertise in identifying and utilizing unique microclimates and terroirs ensures that Baettig wines stand out as excellent representations of Chilean viticulture and winemaking.

Overall, the Baettig project exemplifies the potential of focused, terroir-driven winemaking in Chile, offering wines that are both expressive of their origins and appealing to those seeking sophistication and purity in their wine choices.

Traiguén is a lesser-known wine-producing area located in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile. This area is part of the broader Southern wine region, which is relatively new to viticulture compared to Chile’s more established central valleys. The interest in regions like Traiguén for winemaking is part of a growing exploration into cooler and more southerly locations in Chile, driven by the search for new terroirs and the potential for producing wines with distinct characteristics.

**Climate and Geography:**
Traiguén enjoys a cooler climate than the traditional wine regions to the north, with significant rainfall and cooler temperatures that can challenge grape growing but also offer the potential for developing unique wine profiles. The area's climate and soil conditions are thought to be suitable for varieties that thrive in cooler climates, potentially including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, among others.

**Viticulture:**
As a part of the Malleco Valley, which is the northernmost part of the Southern wine region, Traiguén has seen some experimental vineyard developments. The focus in areas like this is often on creating high-quality, boutique wines that can leverage the unique climatic conditions to produce wines with high acidity and distinctive aromatic profiles.

**Wine Styles and Potential:**
The wines from Traiguén and the broader Southern regions of Chile are still gaining recognition, with producers exploring the best varietal matches and winemaking techniques suited to the local conditions. The cooler climate suggests potential for elegant, aromatic whites and possibly light to medium-bodied reds, which could differentiate them from the more robust wines typically produced in Chile's central regions.

**Development and Recognition:**
While not yet widely recognized internationally, the exploration of new wine regions like Traiguén represents an exciting frontier in Chilean winemaking. These areas are attracting interest for their potential to contribute to the diversity and range of Chilean wines on the global market.

Overall, Traiguén represents an emerging and promising area in Chilean viticulture, with a focus on exploiting its cooler climate to produce distinctive wines that may well add to the rich tapestry of Chile's wine offerings in the future.
