Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC is a small appellation located in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, Italy, on the coast near the town of Bolgheri. The denomination was established relatively recently to recognize the distinctive wines produced in this specific area, which occupies a narrow strip of land between the Mediterranean Sea and inland hills. The maritime influence and geological character of this coastal pocket have long set it apart from other Tuscan wine regions.

The appellation's terroir is defined by its proximity to the sea, which moderates temperatures and creates a warmer, drier climate than inland Tuscany. Soils here are rich in minerals and gravel, contributing structure and definition to the wines. The DOC permits red wines made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc—varieties that thrive in this warm, well-drained environment. These Bordeaux varietals are the focus of production, reflecting the region's historic connection to French winemaking traditions adapted to Tuscan conditions.

Wines from Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC are characterized by ripe, structured reds with notable tannin presence and aging potential. The maritime climate and mineral soils typically produce wines with good acidity and complexity, balancing the natural ripeness of the fruit. These are generally full-bodied expressions with depth and the capacity to evolve over years in the bottle, rather than wines designed for immediate consumption.
