Chateau Montus is a renowned wine producer in the Madiran region of France, known for producing high-quality, age-worthy wines that have gained a cult following among wine enthusiasts. Located in the southwest of France, the Madiran appellation is known for its powerful red wines made from Tannat, a grape varietal that is indigenous to the area.
The history of Chateau Montus dates back to the early 19th century when it was established by the Laplace family. However, it wasn't until the 1980s when the current owner, Alain Brumont, took over the estate that it gained recognition for its exceptional wines. Brumont is considered a pioneer in the Madiran region, as he was one of the first to focus on producing high-quality wines rather than the traditional mass-produced wines that were common in the area.
The vineyards of Chateau Montus cover 100 hectares of land, with vines averaging 30-35 years in age. They are planted on steep, terraced hillsides with clay and limestone soils, providing ideal conditions for the Tannat grape to thrive. The vines are hand-harvested, and the grapes are carefully selected to ensure only the best quality makes it into the final blend.
Chateau Montus produces a range of wines, including the flagship wine, Chateau Montus, and the prestige cuvee, La Tyre. Both wines are made from 100% Tannat and are aged in new French oak barrels for 12-18 months, resulting in complex, full-bodied wines with intense flavors of dark fruits, spices, and a touch of oak.
In addition to their red wines, Chateau Montus also produces a white wine, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, made from a blend of local grape varietals. This wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 months, resulting in a rich and aromatic wine with notes of citrus, honey, and vanilla
