The classic blend typically centers on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, though proportions vary considerably by producer and vintage. These varieties have been cultivated in Bordeaux for centuries, with the region's maritime climate, gravel and clay soils, and established winemaking traditions creating conditions where each grape reaches optimal ripeness and complexity.

Wines made in this style are characterized by structured tannins, dark fruit flavors, and aging potential. Young Bordeaux blends often show blackcurrant, plum, and cedar notes alongside herbal undertones, while bottle age typically adds layers of secondary flavors including leather, tobacco, and graphite. The wines range from medium to full-bodied depending on the vintage and blend composition, with acidity and tannin structure providing backbone and the capacity to develop further in the cellar over many years.

The two main appellations represented here—Pauillac and Pessac-Léognan—demonstrate the diversity within Bordeaux blending traditions. Pauillac, on the Left Bank, typically produces bolder, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wines with pronounced structure. Pessac-Léognan, in the Graves district, tends toward more balanced blends with slightly softer tannins. These wines pair well with beef, lamb, and game, and are equally suited to aged vintages served alongside rich, savory dishes or younger releases enjoyed with lighter fare.
