Famille Pierre Gaillard is a winery based in Condrieu, in the northern Rhône Valley. The producer works with wines from two of the region's most distinctive appellations: Condrieu, known for its white wines, and Saint-Joseph, which produces both reds and whites. Their current range focuses on the classic grape varieties of northern Rhône viticulture.

Condrieu is one of France's smallest and most exclusive white wine appellations, where Viognier is the sole permitted variety. The wines are characteristically aromatic and full-bodied, with stone fruit and floral notes. Saint-Joseph, by contrast, is built on Syrah for its red wines, which tend toward elegant, medium-bodied expressions with pepper and red fruit character. The northern Rhône's steep terrain and continental climate create distinct conditions that shape these wines' profiles compared to their southern Rhône counterparts.

The producer's portfolio reflects these regional strengths: a Condrieu made from Viognier and a red Saint-Joseph from Syrah, specifically their Clos de Cuminaille bottling. These selections represent the core expression of what the northern Rhône appellations are known for.

Wine has been produced in the Rhône Valley for over 500 years, with some of its vineyards being amongst the oldest in France. Syrah rules over the south with a mix of Mediterranean grapes, while in the north, the two stars are Hermitage – grown on an imposing granite hillside above the town of Tain and best put away in the back of the cellar for a decade – and Côte-Rôtie, a star appellation made famous by Guigal's single-vineyard wines, yet also home to dozens of fine producers as yet less well known. The sheer hillsides overlooking the river have to be terraced to make production possible.

St Joseph and Cornas also provide wines of weight and worth, but the best source for good value is Crozes-Hermitage, a satellite appellation which has come alive in the last few years with the arrival of young blood.

The river valley widens out south of Valence into Côtes du Rhône country on the windy alluvial plains and the lower slopes of the hills. It is a most imposing sight during the cold, clear, blue skies of Mistral conditions. The best of the wine villages of the Côtes du Rhône have been promoted to their own appellations - Vinsobres, Vacqueyras - close in quality to the better known Gigondas.

The king of the southern Rhône is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here the galets roulés, rounded rocks from the ancient river bed, provide the context for gloriously rich red wines that are redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, and enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several grape varieties. Thirteen are permitted in all, but Grenache usually dominates, along with Syrah and Mourvèdre in support. A fine vintage needs eight to 10 years cellaring for best results.

If your taste runs to fuller, richer, relatively exotic white wines, then perhaps a white Hermitage or Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the Rhône Valley would suit better, or else a marvellously perfumed, heady Condrieu - headquarters of the Viognier grape.

Saint-Joseph is an appellation in France's northern Rhône Valley, stretching along the west bank of the Rhône River across six communes in the Ardèche and Loire departments. Established as an AOC in 1956, the appellation covers approximately 1,200 hectares of vineyards positioned on steep granite and gneiss slopes that face east and southeast toward the river.

The appellation's terroir is defined by its continental climate with Mediterranean influences, moderated by the Rhône River's proximity. The granite-based soils with decomposed schist and gneiss provide excellent drainage on the steep slopes, which require terraced vineyards in many areas. Saint-Joseph produces exclusively red wines from Syrah, though small amounts of white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne are also permitted under the appellation rules.

Saint-Joseph red wines typically display the mineral backbone characteristic of northern Rhône Syrah, with black fruit flavors and peppery spice notes. These wines generally offer more immediate approachability than their prestigious neighbors Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie, while still maintaining the structured tannins and aging potential that define quality northern Rhône reds. The granite soils contribute to wines with notable freshness and mineral precision.
