Marcel Couturier operates as a wine producer in the Pouilly-Loché appellation of Burgundy, France. This small appellation sits within the Mâconnais district of southern Burgundy, where Chardonnay represents the sole permitted grape variety for white wine production.

Pouilly-Loché covers just 61 hectares across the villages of Loché and Vinzelles, making it one of Burgundy's smaller appellations. The wines from this region typically express a mineral-driven character influenced by the area's limestone and clay soils. Pouilly-Loché whites generally offer more structure and aging potential compared to basic Mâcon wines, while remaining more approachable than the prestigious white Burgundies from the Côte d'Or.

Marcel Couturier focuses on Chardonnay production within this appellation, including bottlings from old vines that can contribute additional concentration and complexity to the wines. The estate's current range demonstrates the consistent quality potential of this lesser-known corner of Burgundy.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Pouilly-Loché is a small white wine appellation located in the Mâconnais district of southern Burgundy, France. The appellation sits adjacent to the more famous Pouilly-Fuissé, sharing similar geological characteristics with its prestigious neighbor. The vineyard area encompasses the commune of Loché and produces exclusively white wines from Chardonnay grapes.

The terroir consists primarily of clay and limestone soils typical of the Mâconnais region, with vineyards positioned on gentle slopes that benefit from favorable sun exposure. The continental climate, moderated by the influence of the Saône River valley, provides the necessary conditions for Chardonnay to ripen fully while maintaining good acidity. Production volumes remain small compared to neighboring appellations, with strict yield limits helping to concentrate flavors in the grapes.

Pouilly-Loché wines display the mineral-driven character typical of Mâconnais Chardonnay, with crisp acidity and subtle stone fruit flavors. The wines tend to be less powerful than those from Pouilly-Fuissé but offer similar elegance and finesse. They typically show citrus and white flower notes when young, developing more complex honeyed and nutty characteristics with age.
