Château Coutet is a wine producer based in Barsac, a commune within the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux. The estate focuses on sweet wines made from the classic white grape varieties of the region.

Barsac occupies a microclimate particularly suited to noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), the fungus that concentrates sugars in grapes and defines the character of Sauternes wines. The appellation's position on the left bank of the Ciron stream creates morning mists that encourage botrytis development while afternoon sun dries the grapes. Wines from Barsac are typically lighter and more delicate than those from other parts of Sauternes, with greater acidity providing balance to their sweetness.

Château Coutet's wines are made primarily from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, the two predominant varieties in Barsac. Semillon provides the base and richness characteristic of the region's sweet wines, while Sauvignon Blanc contributes freshness and aromatic complexity. The balance between these varieties and the precise timing of harvest during botrytis infection are key factors in determining the final character of the wine.

Bordeaux, in the southwest of France, needs little introduction as one of the world's most famous, prestigious and prolific wine regions. The majority of Bordeaux wines (nearly 90 percent of production volume) are the dry, medium- and full-bodied red Bordeaux Blends that established its reputation.

The finest (and most expensive) of these are the wines from the great châteaux of the Haut-Médoc and the Right Bank appellations Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. The former is focused (at the top level) on Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter pair on on Merlot.

The legendary reds are complemented by high-quality white wines based on Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. These range from dry whites to challenge the best from the Burgundy region (Pessac-Léognan is particularly renowned) to the sweet, botrytized nectars of Sauternes.

Barsac is a wine appellation located within the Sauternes region of Bordeaux, France, situated on the left bank of the Garonne River approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Bordeaux city. The appellation covers five communes and is considered one of the most prestigious sweet wine regions in the world. Wines from Barsac can be labeled either as Barsac or Sauternes, though producers often choose the Barsac designation to distinguish their wines' particular character.

The region's terroir combines gravelly soils mixed with clay and limestone, creating ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential for producing exceptional sweet wines. The microclimate, influenced by the nearby Ciron River, generates morning mists that promote botrytis development, followed by sunny afternoons that concentrate the grapes. Permitted grape varieties include Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and small amounts of Muscadelle, with Sémillon typically forming the majority of blends due to its susceptibility to noble rot.

Barsac wines are distinguished by their slightly higher acidity and more delicate, refined character compared to other Sauternes. The noble rot process concentrates sugars while maintaining freshness, producing wines with complex flavors of honey, dried fruits, and citrus, balanced by a mineral backbone. These wines exhibit remarkable aging potential, developing deeper complexity and amber hues over decades in the cellar.
