Collio Goriziano DOC

Collio Goriziano DOC

Collio Goriziano is a white wine appellation in northeastern Italy, located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region near the border with Slovenia. The zone encompasses vineyards around the town of Gorizia, in an area with a long tradition of viticulture that dates back centuries. The appellation was formally established as a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) in 1968, making it one of the earlier designations in the Friuli region.

The Collio hillside terrain benefits from a temperate continental climate moderated by proximity to the Adriatic Sea, with significant temperature variation between day and night that helps develop acidity and aromatic complexity in grapes. The soils are predominantly marl and sandstone, with layers of clay that contribute mineral character to the wines. The appellation permits a range of white varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, and others; Sauvignon Blanc has become particularly associated with the area and represents a substantial portion of production.

Collio Goriziano whites are characteristically dry and fresh, with pronounced aromatic profiles. Sauvignon Blancs from this zone typically display herbaceous and mineral notes alongside citrus and stone fruit, with good acidity and body that reflects the region's cooler climate and calcareous soils. The wines are generally intended for near-term consumption, though better examples can develop complexity with a few years of bottle age.
