A suave, vibrant red hallmarked by haunting scents of rose, wild strawberry, raspberry, sandalwood and graphite. Linear and bordering on racy, thanks to the vivid acidity, with refined tannins. Silky and balanced, this cruises to a long, complex aftertaste.
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is more persuasive than the Clos de Bèze, offering up aromas of ripe cherries, licorice, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with an abundant endowment of fine but firm tannin that tempers what might otherwise be a flamboyantly ripe core of succulent fruit. This is a creditable Bonnes-Mares from Groffier.
The attack on the palate is not surprising in its power, but once in the mouth the wine explodes into a thousand refined flavours. It highlights black fruit rather than red, with notes of leather, liquorice, superb sweet spices, peppers. Without the usual earthy base, its elegance assimilates it to the best vintages from the south of Chambolle more than to the Bonnes-Mares, which is not a fault.

This family business has been working vines in Morey-Saint-Denis since the 19th century. The Groffier estate is, like Burgundy, a small holding of eight hectares. Nicolas Groffier, represents the fourth generation. The plots he cultivates are all on the Côte de Nuits, in the great terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. A small estate that produces very great red Burgundy wines, in particular the Bonnes Mares grand cru.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Bonnes Mares is a highly sought-after wine producer located in the Burgundy region of France. The vineyard is situated in the Côte de Nuits area, which is known for producing some of the finest Pinot Noir wines in the world. The name Bonnes Mares is derived from the French words "bonnes" meaning good and "mares" meaning land, which is a testament to the quality of the soil in this region.

The history of Bonnes Mares dates back to the 16th century when the vineyard was owned by the Cistercian monks. The vineyard changed hands several times over the centuries, and it wasn't until the 20th century that it gained recognition as one of the top wine producers in Burgundy. Today, Bonnes Mares is owned by a group of investors who are committed to preserving the vineyard's rich history and producing exceptional wines.

The style of production at Bonnes Mares is traditional and focused on quality. The vineyard is managed using sustainable farming practices, and the grapes are handpicked and sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used in the winemaking process. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 18 months, which imparts a subtle oak flavor and enhances the wine's complexity.

Bonnes Mares produces both red and white wines, but it is best known for its Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir grapes grown in this region are known for their intense flavor and aroma, which are a result of the unique terroir of the Côte de Nuits. The wine is medium-bodied with a deep ruby color and a complex bouquet of red fruit, earthy notes, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is rich and velvety with a long, smooth finish.

In addition to its Pinot Noir, Bonnes Mares also produces a small amount of Chardonnay. The Chardonnay grapes grown in this region are known for their minerality and acidity, which give the wine a crisp, refreshing taste. The wine is aged in oak barrels, which adds a subtle vanilla flavor and enhances the wine's complexity.

Overall, Bonnes Mares is a top-tier wine producer that is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyard's rich history, traditional style of production, and commitment to quality make it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts.
