There are three barrels of the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny, and when I inquired Frédéric Barnier admitted that he had indeed retained a bit of whole bunch fruit for this cuvée. Bursting with aromas of raspberries, cinnamon, orange rind, rose petals and musk, it's full-bodied, ample and succulent, with terrific depth at the core, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is one of the finest wines in the portfolio this year.
The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny has a very elegant bouquet, well defined with perfumed, violet-tinged blue and red fruit. It feels quite understated, but it is purring along and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium bodied with supple, ripe tannin, a fine silver bead of acidity but maybe missing some sophistication and complexity toward the finish that leaves you wanting more from this lover. Hopefully it will gain more personality and address the final third during the remainder of its élevage.
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny has a more engaging nose than the 2014 Bonnes-Mares now, with vivacious blueberry and raspberry coulis scents, and an underlying minerality that draws you in. The palate is medium bodied with crisper tannin than the grand cru, fine tension, quite linear in style with a tingle of spice towards the gentle but sophisticated finish.
The feisty 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is a completely different animal to the Bonnes-Mares. It explodes from the glass with precocious blackberry, blueberry, creme de cassis and cola scents, plus underlying minerality that will need several years to be fully revealed. The palate is medium-bodied, very well behaved on the entry and then explodes to reveal raucous notes of blackberry, dark chocolate, minerals, and citrus fruits. The finish is quite sharp and racy, lending freshness and tension. This is like opening the door on a party that is already in full flow.
Fresh red raspberry, cherry, ginger, and smoky black tea by now familiar from this vintage’s Jadot collection rise from the glass of 2007 Chambolle-Musigny, with high-toned suggestions of almond extract, kirsch, citrus oils, and herbal-floral distillates lending an alluringly ethereal aura. Polished, bright, and refreshing on the palate, this displays a healthiness of red fruits and clean, concentrated undertone of meatiness; persistent inner-mouth perfume of black tea, jasmine, and iris – and a persistent salinity that makes for mouth-watering invigoration. This fine exemplar of its site ought to be worth pursuing for the better part of a decade.
