Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, perpetuating tradition for nearly 3 centuries and 9 generations. In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyards in Volnay in the famous “Les Caillerets” climat and started to develop the family’s vineyard holdings.

During the French Revolution, property belonging to the clergy and nobility was confiscated and put up for sale. Joseph’s son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, seized the opportunity to extend the family’s vineyard holdings in Beaune including the famous “Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus.”

This desire to build up an exceptional estate in Côte d’Or endured through the generations and acquisitions in the best Villages were added throughout the 19th century and again in the early 20th century.

Volnay is a wine appellation located in the Côte de Beaune section of Burgundy, France. The village sits on the hillsides between Pommard to the north and Meursault to the south, with vineyards positioned at elevations between 230 and 380 meters. The appellation was established under France's AOC system and encompasses approximately 215 hectares of vineyards, including several premier cru climats such as Les Fremiets, Les Santenots, and Clos de la Barre.

The terroir of Volnay consists primarily of limestone-rich soils with varying compositions across different vineyard sites. The slopes face predominantly east and southeast, providing favorable sun exposure while maintaining the cool climate conditions essential for Pinot Noir cultivation. Only Pinot Noir is permitted for red wine production under the Volnay AOC, and the appellation produces exclusively red wines. The vineyards benefit from Burgundy's continental climate with its defined seasons and moderate rainfall.

Volnay wines are traditionally characterized by their elegance and finesse compared to the more robust wines from neighboring Pommard. The wines typically display refined tannins, bright acidity, and aromatic complexity featuring red berry fruits, floral notes, and earthy undertones. Premier cru sites like Les Fremiets and Les Santenots tend to produce wines with additional concentration and aging potential while maintaining Volnay's signature delicate structure and perfumed character.
