La Scola was the first winery established in Gavi in 1919 and not only ranks amongst the top Gavi producers but also one of the most historic white wine producers in Italy. Today, the estate is run by Giorgio Soldati, the founder’s great-grandson, and his daughter, Chiara, who represents the fifth generation. The estate’s 148 acres of vineyards are planted on the hills surrounding the family villa, 30-miles from the Mediterranean. These steep slopes are made up of calcareous-clay and volcanic soils with iron, shot with veins of chalky limestone like that found in Champagne and Chablis, giving that characteristic flinty character. With Piedmont’s oldest Cortese vines (60+ years) and decades of pioneering, family winemaking tradition, La Scolca produces spectacular, complex, and concentrated age-worthy wines now found on the world’s finest wine lists. The colour is light gold-green, and the nose has wonderful buttery mint notes, some Chablis-like flint and a crushed almond beneath. In the mouth there's a raft of cool, mouth-watering apple and lemon fruit, quite a rich texture, and that wet stone character. Long and poised it stays cool and precise and is an exceptional wine in many ways.

La Scolca is a renowned wine producer located in the Piedmont region of Italy. The winery has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s when the founder, Giuseppe Gavioli, began producing wine from the Cortese grape variety. Today, La Scolca is still family-owned and operated, with the fifth generation of the family now at the helm.

The winery is best known for its Gavi di Gavi, a white wine made from 100% Cortese grapes. The wine is produced using traditional methods, with the grapes hand-harvested and carefully selected before being gently pressed. The resulting juice is then fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature to preserve the delicate aromas and flavors of the grapes.

La Scolca's Gavi di Gavi is a crisp, refreshing wine with a bright acidity and notes of citrus, green apple, and white flowers. It is a perfect pairing for seafood, salads, and light pasta dishes.

In addition to its Gavi di Gavi, La Scolca also produces a range of other white wines, including a sparkling wine made from Cortese grapes and a Chardonnay-based wine aged in oak barrels.

Overall, La Scolca is a producer that is highly regarded for its commitment to quality and tradition. Its wines are a true reflection of the terroir of the Piedmont region, and they are sure to delight any wine lover looking for a taste of Italy.

Piemonte (Piedmont) occupies most of northwestern Italy, bordering Switzerland in the north and France in the west and almost reaching the Mediterranean coast. Its capital and largest city is Turin (Torino).

In the wine world, Piemonte is best known for the twin titans of Barolo and Barbaresco, along with other popular red wines made from Barbera and Dolcetto, the white Gavi, and sparkling Asti.

It has more DOCGs (17) and DOCs (42) than any other region (see maps: Asti area, Langhe, Monferrato, and northern), but no IGPs. In 2016, Piemonte produced 2.5 million hl (28.3 million cases) of wine, the majority of it (55%) red and 83% at the DOP level. The region’s primary grape varieties are Barbera (31%), Moscato (22%), Dolcetto (13%), and Nebbiolo (10%).

Gavi is a white wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy. The wine is made from the Cortese grape, which is known for its crisp acidity and delicate fruit flavours. Gavi has a long history, dating back to the 11th century when it was first produced by monks in the area. Today, Gavi is one of the most popular white wines in Italy and is enjoyed around the world.

The production of Gavi is strictly regulated by the Gavi DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) which ensures that the wine is made according to strict standards. The grapes must be grown in the Gavi region and the wine must be made using only Cortese grapes. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve its delicate flavours and aromas.

Gavi is known for its light, crisp, and refreshing taste. The wine has a pale straw colour and aromas of green apple, lemon, and white flowers. On the palate, Gavi is dry with flavours of citrus and stone fruit. The wine has a bright acidity that makes it a perfect pairing for seafood, salads, and light pasta dishes.

Overall, Gavi is a classic Italian white wine that is perfect for any occasion. Its light and refreshing taste make it a great choice for warm summer days, while its crisp acidity makes it a perfect pairing for a variety of foods. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or just starting to explore the world of wine, Gavi is a must-try.
