Brilliant, pale gold with green tints, showcasing its youthful freshness. The bouquet is intensely aromatic with a blend of ripe citrus fruits, including lemon, lime, and grapefruit. There’s also a complex minerality that is signature of the Les Clos vineyard, with hints of flint, wet stone, and oyster shell. The nose develops further with subtle floral notes and a touch of vanilla and spice from oak aging, adding depth and complexity. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with a perfect balance of freshness and power. Ripe citrus and green apple flavours dominate, supported by a pronounced mineral backbone. There’s a creaminess from the oak aging that adds a layer of texture and roundness, but the wine retains a precise and focused acidity, providing a clean and refreshing finish. The finish is long, with lingering citrus, mineral, and saline notes. The wine is structured and has great potential for aging, which will allow the flavours to evolve and deepen over time.
The 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos has turned out brilliantly, mingling aromas of orange oil, confit citrus and crisp green apple with notes of warm bread, white flowers, oyster shell and anise in an incipiently complex bouquet. Full-bodied, layered, and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with broad shoulders and huge depth at the core, concluding with a long, electric finish.
The 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is another obvious success, mingling aromas of citrus and citrus confit with hints of beeswax, peach, and pear in an inviting bouquet. Full-bodied, muscular, and layered, it's textural and fleshy, with a deep and tightly wound core, racy acids and a chalky finish. This is a fine effort that will improve with bottle age, but it is a bit more front-loaded out of the gates than the very fine 2017 rendition.
It’s pure and charming bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, crisp yellow apples, beeswax, and spring flowers is now complemented by classy nuances of oyster shell and warm bread; and on the palate, the wine remains full-bodied, ample, and satiny-textured, with an enveloping core of fruit, ripe but succulent acids and a long, precise and delicately chalky finish, but its impressive structuring extract and depth of concentration are even more apparent. In short, don't miss this superb effort.
The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos has a crisp Granny Smith apple and yellow plum-scented bouquet that is nicely defined, if lacking the "spark" of the 2014 les Clos. The palate is very well balanced with a fresh, crisp opening. I like the energy conveyed by this les Clos and its precision from start to finish, notwithstanding the seam of salinity that surfaces towards the finish. Excellent.

The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours.
