Marillier Pere et Fils is a renowned wine producer based in the picturesque region of Burgundy, France. With a rich history dating back several generations, this family-owned winery has established itself as a leading producer of high-quality wines, particularly their Clos Saint Germain Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay.

The Marillier family has been cultivating vineyards in Burgundy since the early 19th century, passing down their winemaking knowledge and expertise from one generation to the next. This deep-rooted history is reflected in the exceptional quality of their wines, which are crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a profound respect for tradition.

The Clos Saint Germain vineyard, where the Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay is sourced, is located in the prestigious Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. This area is renowned for producing some of the finest Chardonnay wines in the world, and Marillier Pere et Fils is no exception. The vineyard itself boasts old vines, some of which are over 50 years old, resulting in wines that are rich in character and complexity.

The style of production at Marillier Pere et Fils is deeply rooted in the principles of terroir. The winemakers believe that the unique combination of soil, climate, and vineyard location greatly influences the character and flavor profile of their wines. As such, they strive to preserve the natural expression of the grapes by practicing sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the winemaking process.

The Clos Saint Germain Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay is a true reflection of this commitment to terroir-driven winemaking. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, ensuring that only the finest fruit is selected for production. The wine is then fermented and aged in French oak barrels, allowing it to develop a harmonious balance between fruit flavors and subtle oak nuances.

The resulting wine is a true delight for the senses. On the nose, one can expect aromas of ripe citrus fruits, such as lemon and grapefruit, intertwined with hints of toasted almonds and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and luscious, with a creamy texture and a vibrant acidity that brings freshness and balance. Flavors of tropical fruits, such as pineapple and mango, mingle with notes of butter and haz

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.
