San Filippo is a wine estate based in Montalcino, in the southern part of Tuscany, producing exclusively red wines under the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG appellation. Montalcino sits at elevation in the Siena province, and its combination of well-drained clay-limestone soils, warm summers, and significant diurnal temperature variation creates the conditions that have made the zone one of Italy's most serious red wine appellations.
Brunello di Montalcino is made entirely from Sangiovese — referred to locally as Brunello — and is subject to some of the strictest aging requirements in Italian wine law. The wines must spend a minimum of five years from harvest before release, including time in oak and bottle, with Riserva wines held even longer. This extended aging regime, combined with Sangiovese's naturally high acidity and firm tannin structure, produces wines capable of significant development over time. The style tends toward earthy complexity, dried cherry and iron notes, with texture that softens considerably with bottle age.
San Filippo's range includes the Le Lucere and Communali bottlings, both single-vineyard expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. Named vineyard or cru releases of this kind are common among estates seeking to express distinct terroir differences within the appellation, with variations in aspect, altitude, and soil composition producing wines of meaningfully different character despite sharing the same grape variety and regulatory framework.
