There was no frost at d’Yquem in 2017, and botrytis was very regular and even this vintage. The nose opens with very pure notes of freshly sliced oranges, yuzu and lemon barley water with hints of white pepper, fresh ginger and lime cordial. The incredibly rich, unctuous sweetness (148 grams per liter of residual sugar) is beautifully marbled with bright, vivacious citrus fruit and spice flavours, while lifted by well-knit freshness, and it finishes with epic length and great depth.

Die Nase öffnet sich mit elektrischen Noten von reifen Ananas, grüner Mango, Orangenblüten und Zitronenkuchen mit einem Hauch von Pilzen, Limettenschalen, zerkleinerten Steinen und Jasmin. Die Frische am Gaumen ist einfach erstaunlich, durchdringt und hebt Schicht um Schicht von tropischen Früchten und erdigen Vorstellungen, die alle in einer üppigen Textur eingeschlossen sind und in einem sehr, sehr langen, mineralischen Abgang gipfeln. Dies ist wahrlich ein legendärer Jahrgang für d'Yquem. Ich bin mit meinem Zeitfenster für die Verkostung konservativ, und es würde mich nicht überraschen, wenn unsere Nachkommen diesen Jahrgang noch bis weit ins nächste Jahrhundert hinein trinken würden.
Tt entrances with its pure, wild honey notes mixed with almond and white chocolate scents, bestowed with beguiling delineation and focus. The palate is very poised with the acidity nigh on perfect. Occasionally an Yquem only reveals its components parts at this early juncture, necessitates conjecture. However, the 2014 has a sense of harmony and completeness already, as if the élevage is merely there to usher it on to its finished state. There is undeniably great depth here, perhaps less conspicuous than other vintages because of that silver thread of acidity: notes of lemon sherbet, orange zest, shaved ginger and again, a few "flakes' of white chocolate. It is extremely long with tenderness rather than power on the finish. It's not quite up there in the rarefied heights of say, the 2001 or 2009, but it is what we call in the trade, "the business."

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 d'Yquem bursts from the glass with gregarious crème caramel, allspice, dried apricots, mandarin peel and pineapple upside down cake scents plus a fragrant undercurrent of fungi, acacia honey, candied ginger, musk perfume and frangipani. Full-bodied and full-on hedonic in the mouth, the rich, tightly wound layers are still amazingly youthful with bags of citrus sparks and an incredibly long, perfumed finish.

Château d'Yquem wird oft als der größte Süßwein der Welt bezeichnet und hat einen Ruf, der ihm seit dem Mittelalter bis heute folgt. Damals war d'Yquem im Besitz des Königs von England und hat seitdem eine interessante Geschichte hinter sich, unter anderem wurde es in beiden Weltkriegen als Lazarett genutzt. Im Jahr 1996 wurde d'Yquem von LVMH (Moët-Hennessy-Louis Vuitton) nach jahrhundertelangem Familienbesitz von Alexandre de Lur Saluces gekauft.

Das Château d'Yquem verfügt über 113 Hektar Rebfläche, die zu 80 % mit Semillon und zu 20 % mit Sauvignon Blanc bepflanzt sind und auf dem höchsten Punkt von Sauternes liegen, der ein einzigartiges Mikroklima aufweist. Dies ist von großer Bedeutung, da hier Ostwinde durch den Weinberg wehen können, was entscheidend ist, um unerwünschte Feuchtigkeit während der Wachstumsperiode zu entfernen, wenn die Edelfäule einsetzt. Nur vollreife Früchte werden von 150 hochqualifizierten Weinbergsarbeitern geerntet, und die Erträge sind so gering, dass jeder Rebstock nur ein Glas Wein hervorbringt.

In der Bordeaux-Klassifizierung von 1855 wurde Château d'Yquem nicht nur als der größte Wein von Sauternes, sondern der gesamten Region Bordeaux gepriesen und seine goldenen Weine für nahezu unsterblich erklärt.

"Ich bezeichne Yquem nicht als Wein, weil es unendlich viele "Weine" als solche gibt, aber Yquem ist einzigartig. Ich bevorzuge das Wort Nektar - das Getränk der Götter - und wenn ich einen edleren Begriff fände, würde ich mich weniger schämen für unser restriktives Vokabular, das für Superlative so wenig geeignet ist." Der Großteil der Bordeaux-Weine (fast 90 Prozent des Produktionsvolumens) sind die trockenen, mittelkräftigen und vollmundigen roten Bordeaux-Mischungen, die den Ruf der Region begründet haben.

Die besten (und teuersten) sind die Weine aus den großen Châteaux des Haut-Médoc und den Appellationen Saint-Émilion und Pomerol am rechten Ufer. Ersteres konzentriert sich (auf höchstem Niveau) auf Cabernet Sauvignon, letzteres auf Merlot.

Die legendären Rotweine werden durch hochwertige Weißweine auf der Basis von Sémillon und Sauvignon Blanc ergänzt.
