The 2005 Cote Rotie la Landonne is utterly profound, and is certainly in the same league as the '10, '09, '03, '99, '90, '89 and other incredible vintages (the list of top vintages here is almost too long to list). Inky colored, structured, tannic, massively concentrated and still with phenomenal texture and richness, it has the classic dark fruits, tapenade and meatiness of the cuvee, but at age 10, is still an infant. It needs 4-5 years and will be a 50+ year wine.

Vinområdet i det nordlige Rhône eksploderede i popularitet i midten af 80'erne, og det skyldtes i virkeligheden to personer, Etienne Guigal og Robert Parker. Etienne overtog vingården i 1946, men det var hans promovering af regionen kombineret med Robert Parker, der satte hans vin på landkortet. Snart blev Rhônedalen berømt som en vinregion, der producerer nogle af de mest forførende elegante og aromatiske vine i verden, og Guigals Côte Rôtie er en af dem.

E.Guigal er i sandhed en familievirksomhed, hvor Marcel, Etiennes søn, overtog virksomheden i 1961 med hjælp fra sin kone Bernadette, og i dag repræsenterer deres søn Phillipe og kone Eve tredje generation af denne ikoniske ejendom.

Der er blevet produceret vin i Rhônedalen i over 500 år, og nogle af vinmarkerne er blandt de ældste i Frankrig. Syrah hersker i syd med en blanding af middelhavsdruer, mens de to stjerner i nord er Hermitage - dyrket på en imponerende granitbakke over byen Tain og bedst gemt væk bagerst i kælderen i et årti - og Côte-Rôtie, en stjerneappellation gjort berømt af Guigals enkeltmarksvine, men også hjemsted for dusinvis af fine producenter, som endnu er mindre kendte. De stejle bjergskråninger med udsigt over floden skal terrasseres for at gøre produktionen mulig.

St Joseph og Cornas leverer også vine af vægt og værdi, men den bedste kilde til god værdi er Crozes-Hermitage, en satellit-appellation, som er kommet til live i de sidste par år med ankomsten af ungt blod.

Floddalen breder sig syd for Valence ind i Côtes du Rhône-landet på de forblæste alluviale sletter og de lavere skråninger af bakkerne. Det er et imponerende syn under den kolde, klare, blå himmel under Mistral-forhold. De bedste af vinlandsbyerne i Côtes du Rhône er blevet forfremmet til deres egne appellationer - Vinsobres, Vacqueyras - tæt på den mere kendte Gigondas i kvalitet.

Kongen af det sydlige Rhône er Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Her danner galets roulés, afrundede klipper fra det gamle flodleje, rammen om herligt fyldige rødvine, der dufter af sydens varme og urter, og som forstærkes af den kompleksitet, der kommer af at blande flere druesorter. Tretten er tilladt i alt, men Grenache dominerer normalt sammen med Syrah og Mourvèdre som støtte. En god årgang har brug for otte til 10 års lagring for at opnå det bedste resultat.

Hvis du er til mere fyldige, rige og relativt eksotiske hvidvine, så er en hvid Hermitage eller Châteauneuf-du-Pape fra Rhônedalen måske bedre, eller en vidunderligt parfumeret og berusende Condrieu, hvor Viognier-druen har sit hovedsæde.
